ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to investigate the impact of content marketing as a digital marketing strategy on the non-financial performance of SMEs in Lagos. The study was specifically carried out to find out the effect of blog posts and SEO content on brand awareness of SMEs in Lagos, determine the influence of social media content on customer retention and loyalty of SMEs in Lagos, analyze the impact of video and visual content on market reach and visibility of SMEs in Lagos, and investigate the contribution of email marketing content on customer engagement of SMEs in Lagos. The study employed the descriptive cross-sectional survey research design. The population of the target group included registered owners, managing directors and digital marketing executives of SMEs within the Ikeja Local Government Area who were 9,850. Sample size for the study was calculated using Cochran (1977) arriving at the sample size of 384 respondents. The questionnaire was used for data collection, while the data collected were analyzed using frequency tables, mean scores and standard deviations. The hypotheses were tested using Simple Linear Regression statistical tool, SPSS version 27. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that blog posts and SEO content have a significant effect on brand awareness among SMEs in Lagos at β = 0.681, R² = 0.464, P = .000. The study also showed that social media content has a significant influence on customer retention and loyalty of SMEs in Lagos at β = 0.708, R² = 0.501, P = .000. Likewise, the study further revealed that video and visual content have a significant impact on market reach and visibility of SMEs in Lagos at β = 0.694, R² = 0.482, P = .000. The study equally established that email marketing content has a significant contribution to customer engagement of SMEs in Lagos at β = 0.672, R² = 0.452, P = .000. The study therefore recommends that SME owners and managers should consistently invest in high-quality content marketing strategies, including SEO, social media, video marketing, and personalized email campaigns, to improve brand awareness, strengthen customer relationships, expand market reach, and enhance customer engagement for sustainable business growth.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION (Preview)
1.1 Background to the Study
Digital marketing has become a key driver of business growth worldwide, fundamentally changing the way companies communicate and engage with their customers. In Nigeria, the rapid increase in internet access, social media usage, and smartphone adoption has created new opportunities for businesses to reach larger audiences quickly and more effectively than traditional marketing methods (Adeniyi, Adepoju, Adebambo, & Kolawole, 2024). Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in bustling cities like Lagos are increasingly turning to digital marketing to remain competitive, build stronger customer relationships, and enhance their visibility in a crowded market (Awotunde, Oyedele, & Adewale, 2024). As consumers spend more time online, SMEs that adopt digital strategies are better positioned to respond to customer needs, promote their products, and sustain growth in an ever-evolving business environment.
Among the various strategies within digital marketing, content marketing has emerged as one of the most popular approaches for engaging customers and driving business growth. Unlike traditional advertising, which often focuses on direct promotion, content marketing emphasizes creating and sharing valuable, relevant, and consistent content, through blogs, videos, or podcasts, to attract and retain a clearly defined audience (Sharma, 2024). This shift has become evident as more businesses recognize that consumers prefer informative and engaging content over overt sales messages. For SMEs, content marketing offers a particularly attractive option because it is often more cost-effective than large-scale advertising campaigns and allows smaller businesses to build a strong online presence, connect with their target audience, and compete with larger firms in the digital space (Zamri, Abdul Rahim, & Norizan, 2024).
Content marketing has the potential to significantly shape how customers perceive and interact with a brand over time. Through consistent and meaningful content, businesses can build trust, strengthen relationships, and cultivate long-term loyalty among their audience (Holliman & Rowley, 2014). When customers regularly encounter content that resonates with their needs and values, they are more likely to develop a strong affinity for the brand, recommend it to others, and deepen their engagement across digital platforms (Okonkwo & Nwankwo, 2023). In an increasingly competitive environment, sustaining brand visibility and audience engagement can determine whether a business maintains its market position or loses ground to more digitally active rivals. For SMEs, whose long-term health often depends on loyal customer relationships and a recognizable brand presence, content marketing offers a practical and cost-effective pathway toward building the non-financial foundations that underpin sustainable growth.
Recent statistics further highlight the growing importance of digital engagement for businesses in Lagos and across Nigeria. A study of SMEs in Lagos State by Adeniyi, Adepoju, Adebambo, and Kolawole (2024) found that 96 % of surveyed businesses have adopted some form of digital marketing, indicating a high dependence on online engagement. According to a report by Kemp (2023), Nigeria had about 122.5 million internet users in early 2023, including SMEs, representing 55.4% of the population. A survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC, 2024) similarly found that 54% of Nigerian MSME owners considered social media and digitization to be a critical aspect of their business strategy. These trends show that Nigerian SMEs are moving away from traditional advertising and are increasingly creating and sharing content online to connect with customers as people spend more time on digital platforms.
Given the widespread adoption of content marketing among SMEs in Lagos, it has become important to understand how these strategies impact their performance. While many SMEs actively engage in content creation and online promotion, there is limited empirical evidence on the direct effects of these efforts on non-financial performance outcomes such as brand awareness, customer engagement, customer retention, and market visibility. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of content marketing as a digital marketing strategy on the performance of SMEs in Lagos.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although content marketing is increasingly being adopted by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Lagos, there is still limited understanding of how it actually affects their performance. A review of existing literature reveals several important gaps that this study seeks to fill.
The obvious gap is geographical. Most high-quality studies on content marketing and SME performance have been carried out in developed countries such as; United State, United Kingdom, Northern Europe and parts of Asia. This environment enjoys matured digital infrastructure, reliable internet, high digital literacy. As a result, findings from studies like Jarvinen and Taiminen (2016), Holliman and Rowley (2014) Chen Liu (2020) may not apply easily to Lagos which has different consumer behaviors, cultural dynamics, digital infrastructure and economic realities. While some local studies (Oluwaseun and Adesola, 2015; Akande and Yinus, 2018; Babatunde and Mukaila, 2020) have been conducted in Lagos, they do not fully examine how the various aspects of content marketing work together to influence the non-financial performance SMEs in the Lagos metropolitan area.
In Summary, there is a clear theoretical gap. Most previous studies either use theoretical frameworks or depend on a single theory. Commonly the technology acceptance model (TAM) or Uses the Gratifications Theory (UGT) without combining them effectively. No previous research has integrated Uses and Gratifications Theory (UGT) and the Resource Based View (RBV) as complimentary frameworks to better explain how content marketing drives SME performance. While TAM is popularly in Nigeria digital marketing studies, it mainly focuses on technology adoption rather than content gratification and performance mechanisms that are essential to this research.
These gaps matter because Lagos is Nigeria’s biggest commercial hub with a highly dynamic, competitive and unique business environment. Without reliable evidence many SMEs in Lagos keep investing time and money in content marketing without a clear understanding of its real impact. Which leads to poor marketing decisions and missed opportunities for sustainable growth.
This study seeks to address these gaps by investigating the impact of content marketing as a digital marketing strategy on the performance of SMEs in Lagos, using an integrated theoretical framework that combines Uses and Gratifications Theory (UGT) and the Resources-Based View (RBV).
