ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine the effect of content marketing strategy on marketing success of detergent distribution companies in Rivers State. The study was specifically carried out to examine the influence of informative content marketing on the marketing success of detergent distribution companies in Rivers State, assess the effect of social media content marketing on the marketing success of detergent distribution companies in Rivers State, determine the influence of customer engagement content on the marketing success of detergent distribution companies in Rivers State, and examine the effect of visual content marketing including images, videos, and infographics on the marketing success of detergent distribution companies in Rivers State. The study employed the descriptive research design. The population of the study comprised 1,248 management and marketing personnel working in selected detergent distribution companies in Rivers State. A sample size of 303 respondents was determined using Taro Yamane formula, while multi-stage sampling technique involving stratified and convenience sampling methods was adopted. Hence, questionnaire was used for data collection, while the data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, mean scores, and standard deviation. The hypotheses test was conducted using Multiple Regression statistical tool, SPSS v.23. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that informative content marketing has a significant influence on marketing success of detergent distribution companies in Rivers State at β = 0.341, R² = 0.682, P = .000. The study also showed that social media content marketing has a significant effect on marketing success at β = 0.296, R² = 0.682, P = .000. Likewise, the study further revealed that customer engagement content has a significant influence on marketing success at β = 0.254, R² = 0.682, P = .000. The findings also revealed that visual content marketing has a significant effect on marketing success at β = 0.312, R² = 0.682, P = .000. The study therefore recommends that detergent distribution companies should adopt effective informative, social media, customer engagement, and visual content marketing strategies to improve customer engagement, enhance product visibility, and achieve greater marketing success.

INTRODUCTION (Preview)
1.1 Background of the Study
Content marketing has emerged as a dominant strategic orientation in contemporary marketing practice across the globe, driven by the rapid expansion of digital technologies, changing consumer information needs, and the increasing importance of relationship-based marketing. Unlike traditional promotional approaches that emphasize direct selling, content marketing focuses on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent information that attracts, engages, and retains target audiences. According to Ho et al. (2020), content marketing represents a strategic capability that enables firms to build meaningful interactions with customers through information exchange and value creation. Similarly, Alyoshina et al. (2022) describe content marketing as a modern component of marketing strategy that enhances brand visibility and customer relationships through purposeful communication. As digital platforms continue to redefine business interactions, organizations increasingly utilize informative articles, educational materials, visual content, and interactive communications to influence consumer perceptions and purchasing decisions. Darvidou (2024) further posits that effective content marketing contributes to strategic positioning and long-term organizational growth, while Abashidze (2025) emphasizes its role in enhancing market reach and customer attraction across diverse industries. Consequently, content marketing has become a central consideration in discussions of marketing success and organizational competitiveness worldwide.
Building on this global recognition, scholarly discourse has increasingly focused on the mechanisms through which content marketing contributes to business performance and market success. Marketing success is commonly reflected in indicators such as sales growth, customer acquisition, customer retention, market penetration, brand awareness, and profitability. Putra et al. (2025) contend that well-designed content marketing initiatives strengthen customer loyalty by delivering information that aligns with consumer preferences and expectations. In support of this position, Wei et al. (2024) argue that content marketing enhances brand awareness and fosters stronger consumer-brand relationships, thereby improving market outcomes. Furthermore, Yuniarti et al. (2024) maintain that creative and relevant content increases digital marketing effectiveness by stimulating consumer interest and engagement. The growing integration of content marketing into organizational strategies reflects the broader shift toward customer-centric marketing, where businesses seek to provide continuous value beyond product offerings. As noted by Isibor et al. (2025), organizations that successfully align content with customer needs often experience improved online engagement and stronger sales performance, highlighting the strategic significance of content-driven communication in contemporary markets.
Furthermore, the evolution of digital communication technologies has expanded the scope and forms of content marketing available to organizations. Social media platforms, websites, blogs, videos, podcasts, and infographics have become critical channels through which firms disseminate content and interact with stakeholders. Lawal and Adejuwon (2023) observe that social media marketing significantly contributes to sales performance by facilitating direct communication between businesses and consumers. Likewise, May et al. (2025) note that advancements in social media monetization and artificial intelligence have transformed customer engagement processes, enabling firms to create personalized experiences that strengthen consumer participation. Rochefort and Ndlovu (2024) further explain that digital marketing strategies support the development of brand awareness and customer loyalty through continuous online interactions. In a related perspective, Binlibdah (2024) argues that personalized media content enhances consumer efficiency by delivering tailored information that improves decision-making. These developments have stimulated growing academic and managerial interest in understanding how different dimensions of content marketing, including informative, social media-based, engagement-oriented, and visual content, contribute to organizational performance across various sectors.
In addition, the relevance of content marketing has become increasingly pronounced within distribution-oriented industries, where effective communication plays a crucial role in connecting manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and final consumers. Distribution companies operate within highly competitive environments that require strategic approaches for promoting products, strengthening market presence, and sustaining customer relationships. Adama and Okeke (2024) emphasize that modern supply chain and business models in the fast-moving consumer goods sector increasingly depend on integrated marketing approaches to enhance competitiveness and market responsiveness. Similarly, Eze et al. (2024) argue that hybrid distribution models contribute to market penetration when supported by effective communication and customer-oriented strategies. In the context of digital transformation, Eze et al. (2021) further contend that the adoption of digital marketing technologies enables businesses to improve visibility, customer interaction, and operational effectiveness. Corroborating this view, Sanbella et al. (2024) maintain that optimized online marketing strategies significantly enhance sales performance and business development in contemporary markets. These perspectives suggest that content marketing serves not only as a communication tool but also as a strategic resource for achieving marketing success within distribution networks.
Against this broader backdrop, content marketing has become increasingly relevant to detergent distribution companies operating within Nigeria’s consumer goods sector. The detergent market is characterized by intense competition, evolving consumer preferences, and the growing influence of digital communication channels on purchasing behavior. Suganya et al. (2024) assert that marketing-related activities play a significant role in shaping brand awareness and consumer preference for detergent products. Similarly, Ismaya et al. (2022) emphasize the importance of marketing and distribution optimization in enhancing the performance of environmentally friendly detergent enterprises. Within the Nigerian business environment, studies by Ezekiel et al. (2024) and Chilekezi (2025) indicate that digital marketing strategies are becoming indispensable for firms seeking to strengthen customer engagement and market performance. Rivers State, as one of Nigeria’s major commercial hubs, presents a dynamic environment in which detergent distribution companies increasingly employ informative content, social media content, customer engagement content, and visual content to communicate value and strengthen market presence. Therefore, examining the influence of these content marketing dimensions on the marketing success of detergent distribution companies in Rivers State provides an important context for understanding the strategic role of content marketing within contemporary distribution businesses.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Content marketing has become a major driver of organizational visibility, customer attraction, and market performance in contemporary business environments. Ideally, detergent distribution companies are expected to leverage informative content, social media content, customer engagement content, and visual content marketing to increase brand awareness, strengthen customer relationships, improve sales performance, and achieve sustainable marketing success. Scholars such as Ho, Pang, and Choy (2020) argue that content marketing capabilities enable firms to create value-driven interactions that enhance organizational performance. Similarly, Wei et al. (2024) maintain that effective content marketing contributes significantly to brand awareness and customer loyalty. However, the current business environment reveals varying levels of marketing success among detergent distribution companies, suggesting that the extent to which content marketing strategies translate into improved performance remains uncertain. This situation raises concerns regarding the effectiveness of specific content marketing dimensions in driving marketing success within distribution-based businesses, particularly in highly competitive consumer goods markets.
The growing adoption of digital technologies and social media platforms has further increased expectations that organizations should achieve greater customer reach and engagement through content-driven communication. According to Lawal and Adejuwon (2023), social media marketing positively influences sales performance by facilitating interactions between firms and consumers. In corroboration, May et al. (2025) assert that digital engagement mechanisms supported by social media platforms enhance consumer participation and strengthen marketing outcomes. Nevertheless, evidence from practice indicates that many businesses continue to experience varying levels of customer engagement, market penetration, and sales growth despite increasing investments in digital content initiatives. Such variations affect organizational competitiveness, customer retention, and revenue generation. As a result, there is a need to understand whether social media content and customer engagement content are sufficiently contributing to marketing success among detergent distribution companies and whether these content dimensions produce measurable outcomes within the context of Rivers State.
Existing empirical studies have examined content marketing and related marketing strategies across different sectors and geographical contexts. For instance, Putra et al. (2025) investigated the effectiveness of content marketing in attracting consumer loyalty, while Isibor et al. (2025) analyzed content marketing strategies that enhance online engagement and sales for digital brands. Likewise, Yuniarti et al. (2024) explored the influence of creative content on digital marketing effectiveness, and Rochefort and Ndlovu (2024) examined digital marketing strategies in building brand awareness and loyalty. Within Nigeria, studies by Ezekiel et al. (2024) and Chilekezi (2025) focused on digital marketing practices in courier and insurance industries respectively. While these studies have contributed significantly to knowledge, they primarily concentrated on different industries, contexts, and performance dimensions. Consequently, limited empirical attention has been devoted to examining how specific content marketing dimensions jointly influence the marketing success of detergent distribution companies, particularly within Rivers State.
The identified gap is therefore both contextual and conceptual. Contextually, there is a scarcity of studies focusing specifically on detergent distribution companies operating in Rivers State despite the strategic importance of the detergent market within the fast-moving consumer goods sector. Conceptually, previous studies have largely examined content marketing as a broad construct without adequately isolating the contributions of informative content marketing, social media content marketing, customer engagement content, and visual content marketing to marketing success. According to Darvidou (2024), content marketing comprises multiple strategic dimensions whose effectiveness may vary across industries and market conditions. Similarly, Alyoshina et al. (2022) emphasize the need to understand content marketing as a multifaceted strategic tool rather than a single promotional activity. This study therefore seeks to fill this gap by examining the influence of informative content marketing, social media content marketing, customer engagement content, and visual content marketing on the marketing success of detergent distribution companies in Rivers State, thereby providing empirical evidence that will enrich existing literature and improve understanding of content marketing effectiveness within the distribution sector.
