CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION (Preview)
1.1 Background of the Study
The modern world of business has changed dramatically, as businesses realize that sustainable competitive advantage is not only based on the creation of quality products and services, but also on building long-lasting customer relationships. The rise of globalization, technology and the increasing number of digital communication channels have dramatically changed how companies communicate with their customers and have revolutionized the traditional marketing approach. According to  Victor (2026) businesses have increasingly moved away from transational-based strategies to relationship-based strategies focused on ongoing customer relationship and value co-creation. According to Mohammad (2022), companies with the ability to engage customers in meaningful interactions have a greater chance of achieving long-term growth and sustainability within their organization. Similarly, Rahayu (2024) argued that strategic communication has become an integral part of business management today for the reasons of trust, credibility and strengthening market positioning. In addition, Jawaid (2025) argued that consumers' changing demands have led to the need for new communication channels for companies to stay relevant in a competitive business landscape. As such, marketing has progressed from traditional marketing tactics to a tool for maintaining mutually beneficial relationships between business and customer.
As marketing has switched to a more relationship-centric focus, the role of content marketing as an approach to communication, which can shape customer understanding and intentions to act, has become even more important. Content Marketing is the strategic process of creating, sharing and managing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract, engage and retain a specific audience, and, ultimately, encourage profitable customer behavior. Al-Dmour et al. (2023) explain that content marketing is more than just advertising, it's about providing content that is informative, educational, and entertaining, while aligning with consumers' informational need and preference. The use of content marketing, according to Felix and Rembulan (2023), can be used to build brand trust, strengthen the organization's identity, and engage with consumers in a meaningful way. Likewise, Bankole et al. (2023) noted that the use of digital platforms has significantly opened up the opportunities for businesses to reach out to customers with personalized messages for enhancing engagement and brand visibility. Abdulraheem et al. (2025) also elucidated that the effective dissemination of high-value information empowers businesses to captivate their audience, build brand awareness, and drive ongoing engagement beyond the immediate purchase, which in turn enhances the organization's competitiveness.
This rise in the value of content marketing has also sparked an increase in the number of academic and managerial studies focused on customer loyalty, one of the most valued results of a good marketing campaign. Customer loyalty is defined as the continued engagement of customers in regularly purchasing goods and services from a given business or brand even when other options are available, and sometimes accompanied by positive attitudes, positive advocacy and emotional attachment. According to Godwin (2023), customer loyalty is not only the behavioral aspect but also the psychological commitment which to a large extent is responsible for the performance and profitability of organizations. Loyal customers are those who do not waver from the confidence they have in a business and are seen to make repetitive purchase, give positive word of mouth and are resistant to other competitors marketing. (Olakunle et al., 2024). Likewise, Ifeoma Grace et al. (2025) affirmed that customer loyalty is established by the ability of the firm to provide consistent superior customer experience, build trust in the organization and communicate effectively to meet the changing customer needs and requirements. Zahran and Aljuhmani (2025) also posited that quality and customer-focused content boosts trust, fosters emotional connections, and solidifies positive perceptions, which can drive repeat customers. As a result, content marketing has become more and more seen as a fundamental strategy with which companies can build customer loyalty by creating customer relationships based on relevance, credibility and the continuous engagement of customers.
The fashion industry is a prime example in retail where customer relationships, brand perception and effective communication play an important role in customer buying habits and customer loyalty. In the fashion industry, businesses face a fast-changing market with consumers' tastes and lifestyle, along with the competition pressure, making it essential to always stay connected with customers using new marketing strategies. Victor (2026) noted that as the fashion industry evolves, content marketing is becoming more important for businesses to convey their brand identity, product uniqueness, and deepen customer relationships through various communication channels. Abdulraheem et al. (2025) also added that localization helps businesses resonate with their customers by showing them that the business understands their cultural orientation, lifestyle plans, and preferences in the purchasing process. Fashion entrepreneurship in Effurun, Delta State is an important part of the commercial activities in the area as a whole and the variety of customers is defined by their different purchasing patterns where digital interaction and brand communication play a significant role. Bankole et al. (2023) insisted that marketing communication, which is context specific, increases the engagement of customers by making the messages of the organizations relevant to the target market. In the light of this, the study of the relationship between content marketing and customer loyalty among fashion businesses in Effurun, Delta State is relevant because it offers an appropriate context in which the nexus between content marketing and customer loyalty can be explored to examine the contribution of content marketing as a marketing strategy to the development and maintenance of lasting relationship with their customers in the local fashion business.

1.2 Statement of  the Problem
The attainment of customer loyalty remains a strategic priority for businesses because loyal customers contribute to business sustainability, increased patronage, and positive referrals. For fashion, this goal is becoming more and more reliant on businesses' ability to relay meaningful and valuable information which keeps their customers engaged. Content marketing is one of the critical strategies to build customer engagement and build relationships with customers as described by Al-Dmour et al. (2023). In the same way, Victor (2026) asserted that companies that continually offer relevant content have a better chance of building long-term relationships with their consumers. Overall, fashion companies should use content marketing effectively to foster ongoing customer interactions, build loyalty, and drive repeat business. This expectation has spurred interest in reconciling content marketing with customer loyalty, especially for local fashion businesses where customer retention is a key factor in ensuring the business' survival and competitiveness.
Although many fashion companies are now aware of the benefits of content marketing, there are signs that many are not making the most of it to build strong customer loyalty. Marketing is often done to sell a product rather than create informative, engaging and customer-centred content that can be sustained in the long-term to keep customers happy. This means that customer engagement might not be consistent, and repeat patronage and customer commitment may not come to the desired extent. Abdulraheem et al. (2025) explained that continuous value creation is needed for effective content marketing that can build trust and emotional bonds with customers. Similarly, Godwin (2023) stated that it's not enough to run promotions to build customers loyalty; customers are built loyal by ongoing interaction and positive customer experiences. To tackle this, it's important to understand the role content marketing plays in the fashion business and what its impact is on customer loyalty.
Moreover, while some of the studies have focused on content marketing and customer loyalty in various industries and geographical area, limited empirical studies have been focused on fashion businesses in Effurun, Delta State. Due to the variations in customer preferences, business environments and communication, it is not possible to simply generalise the findings from other locations without empirical verification. Previous research has mainly focused on a wider organizational context and there is little evidence on the impact of content marketing on local fashion businesses' customer loyalty. It is important to note that, according to Bankole et al., (2023), the study of marketing communication needs to be studied in the specific business context as the response of customers to it will differ across markets. Likewise, Ifeoma Grace et al. (2025) argued that customer loyalty is influenced by contextual elements which varies from one industry to another, and from one location to another. To bridge this gap, the study aims to explore the correlation between Content marketing and Customer Loyalty to fashion brands in Effurun, Delta State, Nigeria to offer empirical evidence that can be used in effective fashion marketing.
