ABSTRACT
This study was carried out on an evaluation of the impact of money politics on electoral outcomes in Nigeria (2019-2023). Specifically, the study aims to assess the factors that propelled the introduction of money politics in Nigeria, analyze the impact of money politics on electoral outcome in Nigeria,  investigate the factors that poses as a challenge in curbing money politics in Nigeria and recommend strategies for curbing the influence of money politics in order to promote free and fair elections in Nigeria. The study employed the historical research design. The findings revealed that monetary politics, defined as the use of financial incentives to influence voter behavior and electoral outcomes, persistently erodes the integrity of elections. It sustains corruption, promotes vote-buying, and restricts the involvement of candidates with insufficient financial means. This approach undermines the democratic premise of free and fair elections by favoring money above talent and public support, thereby jeopardizing the caliber of elected officials and government. The study emphasizes that while legislative frameworks are in place to mitigate financial influence in politics, enforcement is inadequate, allowing financial manipulation to continue as a significant determinant of political results. To fortify democracy in Nigeria, it is imperative to implement election rules more rigorously, augment voter education about the perils of monetary politics, and intensify initiatives to foster openness in campaign finance. These steps may guarantee that elections accurately represent the genuine desire of the people, eventually resulting in a more responsible and efficient political system. The study thereby recommends that there should be stricter enforcement of existing electoral laws, particularly those related to campaign financing and vote-buying. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant agencies should be empowered with more resources and legal backing to investigate and prosecute offenders, ensuring that violators face significant consequences.

INTRODUCTION (Preview)
1.1 Background to the Study
The global society is increasingly apprehensive about the threat posed by money politics to the sustainability of democracy globally. Money politics have been a focal point in academic and political discourse globally because of their substantial danger to free, fair, and peaceful democratic elections (Corentin, 2016). Monetary politics has a lengthy history and deep foundations in electoral processes globally. Since 1883, the United Kingdom has enacted legislation to prevent political candidates from incurring excessive expenditures or participating in financial mismanagement (Babalola & Abba, 2017). The political dilemma in the United States of America originates from financial influences (Enejoh & Ekele, 2021).

The political history of Africa, particularly Nigeria, illustrates that financial influence has traditionally affected electoral results. The use of financial resources to sway elections was an existing concern throughout the Second Republic (1979–1983); however, it has been more pronounced in recent years. This became increasingly evident with the fall of the Fourth Republic in 1999 (Adekeye & Abdulrauf, 2017). The period during which people harbored significant hopes that democracy would facilitate fair and equitable growth, contrasting with military authority, so enhancing the quality of life. Accusations of extensive vote-buying and manipulation of the electoral process via financial incentives undermined the legitimacy of the 2007 general election results (Akpan & Reason, 2019).

The elections of 2015 and 2019, albeit somewhat improved in openness, continued to see substantial occurrences of monetary influence, indicating the enduring nature of this problem (Ojo, 2019). The detrimental impact of monetary politics on the manipulation of the election process by the political class is concerning, as this has been more evident since the establishment of the Fourth Republic in 1999. The era that heralded optimistic expectations for democracy to enhance the lives of individuals and foster fair and equitable growth, in contrast to the military government. Regrettably, several Nigerians have expressed disillusionment with the efficacy of past democratic administrations and have diminished trust in political institutions owing to the unethical activities linked to the country's electoral process. Danasabe (2020), Ibrahim, Sani, Danladi, and Adamu (2015), and Ukase (2016) contended that political opportunists and persons with special interests have usurped the election process, hence undermining the institutional institutions designed to govern it.

In Nigeria, the politics of finance dictate who attains political office and who gains access to power in the general elections. A consortium of sponsors, referred to as godfathers, financially supported their designated candidates, known as godsons, to get indirect access to corridors of power and exert influence over the governing body for profitable contracts, bribes, advantageous appointments, and nepotism. The influence of money on Nigerian politics fundamentally undermines the political process, favoring the highest bidder (Ibrahim & Abubakar, 2015). One cannot aspire to win any public position without sufficient income or financial backing from important benefactors who will finance the campaign and electoral activity. The aforementioned dynamic rendered Nigerian democracy and politics precarious, heavily influenced and dictated by financial resources.

The prevalence of money politics in Nigeria can be attributed to several factors, including an intense desire to win at any cost, competition among elites, political parties, and godfathers to achieve victory for the purpose of wealth accumulation, a significant degree of ignorance, and insufficient political socialization, compounded by a political culture that prioritizes financial influence over integrity or performance. Monetary politics has several ramifications, including vote buying, electoral manipulation, political violence, electoral misconduct and anomalies, inadequate service provision by elected officials, and suboptimal socioeconomic and political advancement. The ramifications of monetary politics on political results in Nigeria are significant. Initially, it undermines the significance of democratic engagement, since voters tend to prioritize immediate monetary benefits above enduring political considerations (Babayo & Mohammed, 2016). This compromises the accountability of elected officials, who may favor the interests of their financial supporters above those of the constituents.

Moreover, it creates an inequitable environment where wealthier candidates possess a significant edge, resulting in the marginalization of less wealthy but possibly more competent persons from engaging in politics (Ojo, 2019). This distortion of the democratic process engenders political corruption and undermines the entire governance framework of the nation. Notwithstanding several attempts to mitigate the impact of financial resources in politics, such as the implementation of campaign finance rules and regulations by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), monetary influence persists in Nigeria's electoral processes. The researcher, therefore, sought to evaluate the impact of money politics on electoral outcomes in Nigeria (2019-2023).

1.2 Statement Of The Problem

In Nigeria, money politics has permeated every aspect of the political process and has a major impact on the results of elections. Fair competition and democracy are undermined when money is used to influence voters' choices, rally support, and manipulate the political process. Election integrity is weakened when candidates for public office depend more and more on money backing to win votes; as a result, elections often turn into financial power struggles rather than engagements motivated by policy (Ukase, 2016). Because people are often forced or encouraged to vote for politicians who promise financial or material rewards rather than considering their credentials and agendas, this practice undermines the importance of free and informed choice.

The political system in Nigeria is greatly impacted by the predominance of money politics. Because candidates with less financial clout are sidelined, it encourages corruption, erodes institutional frameworks, and maintains inequality (Ibrahim, Sani, Danladi, and Adamu, 2015). Furthermore, this phenomena raises the danger to democratic governance by intensifying voter indifference and undermining public confidence in the political process (Danasabe, 2020). The influence of financial inducements is still a significant concern even after many changes, such as the adoption of campaign finance restrictions, were implemented to reduce money politics. Given the persistent influence of money politics, it is essential to evaluate the impact of money politics on electoral outcomes in Nigeria (2019-2023).
