ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine artificial intelligence and the future of journalism in Nigeria: threat or tool. The study was specifically carried out to examine the extent to which artificial intelligence is adopted in news gathering, production, and dissemination in Nigeria, assess the perceived benefits of AI adoption on journalistic efficiency, accuracy, and productivity among Nigerian media practitioners, determine the extent to which AI poses a threat to job security and professional relevance among journalists in Nigeria, and evaluate the strategies Nigerian journalists are adopting to balance the opportunities and risks presented by AI in the practice of journalism. The study employed the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised 1,248 registered journalists working in selected print, broadcast, and online media organizations in Nigeria. A sample size of 303 respondents was determined using the Taro Yamane formula, out of which 288 valid questionnaires were retrieved and used for the analysis. Multi-stage sampling technique involving stratified and convenience sampling methods was adopted for selecting the respondents. Hence, the questionnaire was used for data collection, while the data collected were analyzed using frequency tables, mean scores, and standard deviation. The hypotheses were tested using Pearson Chi-square and Logistic Regression statistical tools. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that artificial intelligence has been moderately adopted in news gathering, production, and dissemination with a grand mean of 3.34. The study also revealed that artificial intelligence has significant perceived benefits on journalistic efficiency, accuracy, and productivity among Nigerian media practitioners with r = 0.642, t = 14.16, p = 0.021. Likewise, the study further revealed that artificial intelligence poses a significant threat to job security and professional relevance among journalists with r = 0.587, t = 12.27, p = 0.034. Furthermore, the logistic regression analysis indicated that the strategies adopted by Nigerian journalists to balance the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence were statistically significant with p-values less than 0.05 across all the variables examined. The study therefore recommends that media organizations should provide continuous artificial intelligence training for journalists, establish ethical guidelines for AI usage, encourage human oversight of AI-generated content, and promote collaboration between journalists and artificial intelligence technologies to enhance professional journalism in Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION (Preview)
1.1 Background to the Study
In recent decades, the development of computing and internet technology and the transformation of information on digital platforms have changed how information is produced, processed and shared by individuals, organisations and institutions. These technological developments have facilitated efficiency, accessibility and interactivity in communication processes, and hence have an impact on social, economic, political and cultural activities. Moran and Shaikh (2022) suggest that as intelligent digital technologies got more and more embedded in communication systems, opportunities for innovation and improved information management grew in various sectors. Similarly, Folayan et al. (2023) said the technological evolution had continually transformed the process of institutional communication through a digital transformation that had induced automated approaches to information processing. Bello et al. (2025) also indicated that the increasing reliance on sophisticated technologies was a global phenomenon with a trend towards a digitally driven society, where information could be created and disseminated more quickly and accurately. As a result, technological progress has become a key element of current communication and a basis for further innovative communication practices to develop and emerge.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the most transformative technological innovations of the 21st century, with the continuous evolution of digital communication playing a significant role. Artificial Intelligence is the capability of computer systems to mimic the human intelligence process by learning, reasoning, problem solving, understanding language, decision making and pattern recognition. Mohammed et al. (2024) state that AI has progressed beyond simple automation, enabling the processing of vast amounts of data, creation of human-like content, and facilitating informed business decisions in diverse fields. The ability of AI to streamline work processes, enhance accuracy, and boost productivity has made it an indispensable technological asset, as posited by Akintade and Park (2026). Similarly, Gbaden et al. (2024) argued that the advancements in machine learning, natural language processing, and predictive analytics have greatly broadened the scope of practical use cases for Artificial Intelligence in communication and information management. Obi and Nwokeocha (2025) also noted that AI technologies had become more accessible, thus contributing to their adoption in a developing economy like that of Nigeria, and that AI tools were becoming a key enabler for digital transformation across many professional sectors.
The adoption of Artificial Intelligence into various aspects of professional life garnered significant attention, particularly in the field of journalism, where AI can aid in news creation and delivery. Journalism is the occupation of collecting, verifying, processing, interpreting and disseminating news and information to the public via various communication mediums. AI has brought about the rise of ‘smart' systems that can help journalists with news writing, editing content, audience analysis, multimedia production, translation, and fact-checking. Nwafor et al. (2025) revealed that the newsroom had been revolutionized by Artificial Intelligence, which has enabled quickness and efficiency in the production of news and assist journalists in performing routine editorial tasks. AI technologies had increasingly become a complement to the practice of journalism with a view to providing data-driven insights that enhance editorial decision-making and audience engagement, Olawuyi and Enuwah (2025) explained. Umejei, et al., (2025) further noted that with the advent of intelligent technologies, there were greater opportunities for innovation in news organizations, such as with automated content generation and real-time information analysis. In addition, Bello et al. (2025) argued that the use of Artificial Intelligence in journalism marked a crucial step in the digital transformation of media organizations, as technological progress continued to support and enhance professional journalistic roles and the communication process.
As the world continues to undergo a digital revolution, the role of Artificial Intelligence in the Nigerian media sector has grown even more critical. In keeping with the new trends in the use of information, Nigerian journalism has gradually moved to the web, adopted multimedia reporting, data-driven communication and digital broadcasting. This change has paved the way for Artificial Intelligence to slowly be integrated into the newsroom and media innovation. The new digital technologies had made media organizations in developing countries to embrace the modernization of newsroom operations by using intelligent technology application, according to Akintade and Park (2026). Mohammed et al. (2024) further emphasized the growing role of Artificial Intelligence in content production, information handling, and audience interaction in today's media landscape. Obi and Nwokeocha (2025) also reported that Nigerian media practitioners have continued to experiment with AI tools and techniques in a bid to enhance their journalistic effectiveness and stay abreast with the changing digital communication environment. In this regard, the study examines Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Journalism in Nigeria by exploring how the increasing integration of Artificial Intelligence technologies is impacting on the practice of journalism and the question of whether Artificial Intelligence is a threat or a tool to the future of journalism in the Nigerian media industry.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In an era where media organizations are leveraging intelligent technologies to gather, produce, edit, verify, and engage their audience, Artificial Intelligence is increasingly playing a significant role in modern journalism. The rise of AI is a testament to the media industry's overall digital transformation, where technology innovations are constantly reshaping newsroom workflows and practices around the world. The rise of digital media in Nigeria has also paved the way for the increasingly integration of AI tools in journalism, thereby introducing new dimensions to news production and dissemination. Mohammed et al. (2024) noted that Artificial Intelligence was playing a growing role in the media's operations, where it automates and data-driven processes. Likewise, Akintade and Park (2026) insisted that intelligent technologies continued to shape communication practices as it is seen to improve the efficiency of operations in media institutions and fostering innovation within them. This integration is an indication that Artificial Intelligence and the future of journalism in Nigeria is evolving.
While Artificial Intelligence is gradually impacting the media industry in Nigeria, there is uncertainty about its future impact. The ideal use case for AI is one where it becomes a tool that aids, augments and supports journalists in creating accurate and informed news products while also boosting productivity. But ongoing debates show that there is a split opinion of the value of AI as a technological tool and as a possible risk to professional journalism regarding editorial autonomy, ethical responsibility, newsroom practices and the safeguarding of journalistic values. In the context of journalism, Nwafor et al. (2025) noted that there were different interpretations on how AI was impacting the practice of journalism. Similarly, Olawuyi and Enuwah (2025) pointed out that the continued development and application of intelligent technologies had continued to influence the future trajectory of journalism in digital media.
Previous studies have been done mostly from a big picture perspective of ‘digital communication' or ‘technological innovation' or ‘media transformation', and few have focused on comprehensively considering whether AI should be seen as a threat or a tool in the future of journalism in Nigeria. As a result, there is still limited empirical knowledge, regarding how journalists and media stakeholders view the growing presence of AI in the Nigerian media and the future implications of this. This knowledge gap restricts the use of context-specific evidence to help make informed decisions for the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in journalism by media organisations, policy makers, journalism educators and practitioners. The study aims to fill this gap by discussing Artificial Intelligence and the future of journalism in Nigeria, to provide evidence-based findings on whether or not AI is a threat or a tool for the further development of journalism in Nigeria.
