ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine the factors influencing effective communication among nurses working in Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Afikpo, Ebonyi State. The study was specifically carried out to identify the personal factors influencing effective communication among nurses working in Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Afikpo, Ebonyi State, identify the organizational factors influencing effective communication among nurses, and assess the educational factors influencing effective communication among nurses. The study employed the descriptive survey research design. A total population of 120 nurses working in Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Afikpo, Ebonyi State was used for the study. A sample size of 92 respondents was determined using Taro Yamane formula, while 77 validated copies of questionnaire were used for analysis. The multi-stage sampling technique involving stratified and convenience sampling methods was adopted for the study. Hence, the questionnaire was used for data collection, while the data collected were analyzed using frequency tables, mean scores, and standard deviation. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that personal factors such as confidence level, emotional state, language barriers, poor listening skills, stress and fatigue, and interpersonal relationships influence effective communication among nurses with mean scores of 3.61, 3.45, 3.45, 3.56, 3.48, and 3.56 respectively. The study also showed that organizational factors such as communication channels, management support, staffing level, teamwork, staff meetings, and work environment influence effective communication among nurses with mean scores of 3.52, 3.55, 3.51, 3.58, 3.45, and 3.53 respectively. Likewise, the study further revealed that educational factors such as professional training, communication training, educational qualification, seminars and workshops, nursing education, and orientation programmes influence effective communication among nurses with mean scores of 3.56, 3.45, 3.51, 3.48, 3.53, and 3.45 respectively. The study therefore recommends that hospital management should provide regular communication training, supportive organizational structures, adequate staffing, and continuous professional education to enhance effective communication among nurses.

INTRODUCTION (Preview)
1.1 Background to the Study
Communication is one of the basic processes that human societies organize, relationships are developed and collective goals achieved. Communication in modern institutions is used to transfer information, co-ordinate activities and maintain interpersonal relationships. The health care industry is especially reliant on communication as interactions between health care professionals and those receiving services are ongoing. Community and institutional communication, as highlighted by Abah et al. (2025), continues to be vital in disseminating health information and fostering coordinated healthcare practices. Likewise, Meneses-La-Riva et al. (2025) noted that communication plays a vital role in healthcare environments as a key factor in efficiency and collaboration. Pandey (2021) further pointed out that in clinical settings, communication is used to build trust, emotional support and meaningful relationships. As a result, communication has become a growing key to the functionality of an organization and quality healthcare systems worldwide.
Given the importance of communication in healthcare systems, it is no surprise that it is central to nursing practice, as nurses are continually interacting with patients, families, and other health professionals. The communicative processes are used mostly in the nursing activities of assessment, treatment administration, health education and emotional support. Therapeutic communication is an essential aspect of nursing practice and fosters interpersonal relationships essential for quality care as per Mersha et al. (2023). Appiah et al. (2022) also claimed that communication is effective and enables nurses to build connections and engage with care recipients. Bekele et al. (2022) also argued that communication is an important sign of professionalism and caring for patients. Khosravizad (2021) described effective communication as both verbal and nonverbal communication that helps to improve understanding and working relations between the nurse and others. The evolution of communication from a societal requirement to a professional nursing competency highlights the irreplaceable role of communication in health care delivery systems.
The constellation of personal, organizational and educational elements that shape communicative behaviours and competencies influence the execution of effective communication in nursing practice. A nurse's personal qualities like self-awareness, emotional intelligence, confidence, communication skills and interpersonal orientation affect the nurse's interaction with other nurses and patients. Jung and Jung (2025) reported that there is a significant relationship between communication competence and self-awareness and interpersonal efficacy in nurses. Similarly, Yazew et al. (2021) found that the communication skills of nurses are affected by individual attributes and behavioural dispositions. The organizational elements also play a significant part in communication processes in healthcare settings. Akinyemi et al. (2022) stated that the conditions of an organization affect the attitudes and interactions of the nurses, and Ogbuabor et al. (2022) found that workplace environment and QWL influence the nature of work relationships and communication among nurses. Educational readiness also helps to improve communicative capacity by providing nurses with theoretical knowledge and skills necessary for successful professional communication (Pandey, 2021; Mersha et al., 2023).
In healthcare settings, where nursing roles involve continuous collaboration and coordinated communication, the interplay of personal, organizational, and educational factors becomes even more important. Alharazi et al. (2025) identified several interconnected factors that impact the way nurses communicate with patients during their care. Gheshlagh et al. (2024) also asserted that various individual and institutional factors influence the communicative effectiveness of communication between nurses and patients. Keutchafo et al. (2022) also highlighted that the context of healthcare settings can impact the quality and appropriateness of nurses' communicative behaviours. Effective communication remains a crucial aspect in the management of patients, interprofessional collaboration, and service delivery in healthcare institutions in Nigeria (Abah et al., 2025; Kaware et al., 2022). One of such health care facilities is the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Afikpo in Ebonyi State where nursing communication is a vital part of nursing practice. Therefore, the personal, organizational and educational factors that affect the communication effectiveness of nurses in this setting are important to examine in order to gain empirical knowledge about communication practices of nurses in the profession and in the hospital setting.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Communication is one of the fundamental skills necessary to provide safe, therapeutic, and patient-centered nursing care. However, there is evidence that communication in the nursing profession is inconsistent and is affected by many professional and organizational factors. Mersha et al. (2023) found that therapeutic communication among nurses is variable and is related to differences in professional competence and interpersonal abilities. Also, Bekele et al. (2022) found that patients commonly experience inconsistencies in the quality of communication they receive from nurses, and Appiah et al. (2022) noted that there are inconsistencies in how nurses communicate, share information, listen, and respond to patient concerns. Alharazi et al. (2025) and Gheshlagh et al. (2024) also found that barriers exist that impact the effectiveness of nurse-patient communication in healthcare settings. The presence of these communication issues suggests that the ability to communicate effectively in nursing practice is still an issue that needs to be systematically studied.
In the modern healthcare environment, effective communication is essential for nurses, as it directly impacts their relationships, coordination of care, patient engagement, and quality of services. Effective communication is crucial for nurses to create meaningful interactions and engage patients in care processes as stated by Khosravizad (2021). Pandey (2021) also stated that communication is a medium for providing emotional support, exchanging information and building trust between the nurse and the patient. Moreover, Yazew et al. (2021) reported that communication skills of nurses are influenced by various factors both professionally and personally, indicating that communication effectiveness should not be taken for granted in nursing practice. Communication also plays an important role in Nigeria as nurses make up a large part of the workforce in patient care and community health activities (Abah et al., 2025). However, some healthcare contexts in Nigeria suggest differences in work experiences and organizational conditions which could affect professional interactions and communication practices (Ogbuabor et al., 2022; Akinyemi et al., 2022).
The foregoing situation necessitates the need for this study as poor communication in the nursing care environment can affect the quality of interpersonal relationships and limit the ability of nurses to provide patient-centred care. While the importance of communication and the factors that influence communication have been identified in different settings, there is a need to explore the factors that affect communication in a particular healthcare setting and how these factors affect nursing communication and professional performance. Obtaining evidence on this is crucial for enhancing communication skills of nurses, for institutional strategies that can foster effective communication, and for the improvement of quality healthcare delivery.
