INTRODUCTION (Preview)
1.1 Background to the Study
The unprecedented development of information and communication technology (ICT) has revolutionized the organization of the modern economies and the operation of business activities around the world. The digital revolution has created an environment where information is created, spread, and used at a very rapid and high speed, which improves commercial interactions and competitiveness of organizations. The adoption of digital technologies has not only revolutionized the way we communicate, but it also enables innovation, market access, and value creation in the businesses. Adejuwon and Lawal (2022) reported that the implementation of digital technologies was able to improve the performance of the business and communication processes, which in turn improved the efficiency of the organization. Likewise, Mac-Ozigbo (2021) reported that technological advancement redefined commercial activities and offered more elaborate platforms for the interaction and exchange of information between businesses and customers. In addition, Owolabi et al. (2024) emphasized that the process of digital transformation also facilitated the development of entrepreneurial ventures, as it created more business opportunities and allowed for operational flexibility in businesses in different sectors. Similarly, Ibrahim et al. (2024) claimed that digital connectivity enhanced the interaction between businesses and people, enabling long-term business relationships. All these have transformed digital communication into a powerful tool for economic development and growth of organisations and have paved way for the innovative marketing approaches that are still reshaping the face of business in the current world.
The advancement of digital technologies in commercial activities has, in turn, led to the extensive use of social media advertising as a key part of today's marketing communication. Social media advertising is an art of creating, sharing, and marketing paid promotional messages using social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok, X, and LinkedIn that aim to change customer opinion, build brand awareness, and encourage consumers to make purchases. Social media advertising is different from traditional advertising methods, as it allows for a more interactive approach that allows businesses to create a direct, on-going line of communication with their audience. Eze et al. (2021) stated that the use of social media advertising changed the face of the marketing of an organization as it introduced opportunities for personalized communication and continuous interactions with customers. According to Isiaka et al. (2022), the interactive structure of social media platforms allowed organisations to use the tools of adding multimedia content and the segmenting of audience, which increased the effectiveness of the ads. In addition, Haque et al. (2024) found that social media advertising boosted customer involvement by offering platforms to receive feedback, engage with customers, and assess the behavior of the campaigns. Owolabi et al. (2024) also identified that in an era of high competition, organisations have been seen to incorporate social media ads into their marketing campaigns, as they have the ability of reaching broad markets while also being cost effective and fostering an organisation's visibility.
Social Media advertising has grown in significance for the small and medium enterprises (SMEs), who are one of the key players for economic development, employment generation and entrepreneurial development. Generally, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are business units that are self-employed and self-managed with relatively small capital investments, small labour force, small business size and contribute significantly to the productivity and wealth creation of the country. Afolayan and Babarinde (2025), reported that SMEs are central to driving the economic diversification in the sense of promoting innovation, local production, and inclusive economic participation. Inwang et al. (2025) reported that the use of digital marketing tools, especially social media marketing, boosted SMEs' competitive ability, which improved customer communication and increased market visibility. Mohamed et al. (2025) also noted that SMMs help small businesses to boost their brand awareness, customer acquisition, and growth in dynamic market settings. In the same vein, Okechukwu et al. (2025) claimed that a well leveraged social media advertising positively affected the growth of the organization with an increase in customer engagement, brand positioning, and market penetration. Ibrahim et al. (2024) also claimed that digital advertising platforms could help SMEs promote their businesses optimally while contributing to sustainable business growth by engaging with customers, both new and existing.
In the context of the Nigerian business environment, the significance of social media advertising is becoming more apparent as small and medium enterprises are increasingly adopting digital media and platforms to meet changing trends in consumer engagement and competition. The transition is especially important in the commercial and manufacturing hub of Aba in Abia State, which has a rich commercial and business enterprise environment, with a large population of indigenous businesses that are in production, business and service delivery. Mac-Ozigbo (2021) found that the business setting in Aba exhibited entrepreneurial attributes which indicated high potentials for innovation and adaptation to new technological innovations in the business field. This is in agreement with the report by Adejuwon and Lawal (2022), that most Nigerian SMEs have begun to integrate digital marketing strategies into their business activities to boost their competitive advantage and improve their customer relationship. Owolabi et al. (2024) also revealed that with the rapidly expanding social media platforms there are emerging opportunities for businesses to break the boundaries of geographical location and expand reach. Additionally, Inwang et al. (2025) and Okechukwu et al. (2025) highlighted how the increasing use of social media advertisements in SMEs continued to shape marketing strategies and business growth in Nigeria. In this context, evaluation of the influence of social media advertising on the growth of SMEs in Aba, Abia State, Nigeria becomes relevant as a source of academics understanding of the influence of digital advertising on enterprise development in one of the dynamic commercial centres in Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Digital technologies in business is making marketing functions and business growth in various areas of the economy much easier. Social media advertising has become a key promotional tool by which businesses can reach their consumers, build their brand and gain competitiveness in the market. Social media advertising is anticipated to help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with customer acquisition, expand outreach and aid in sustainable business growth. Digital marketing is an essential part of the business management system today as it enhances the performance of the business (Adejuwon and Lawal, 2022). Also, Mac-Ozigbo (2021) argued that the use of digital communication technologies has continued to shape commercial activities and entrepreneurial development and this has been gaining momentum. Therefore, it is important to understand the role of social media advertising in the development of SMEs, which may be a study and business area.
Although social media advertising has become a popular option for SMEs, there is a lack of clarity whether this has an impact on the bottom line of their business or not, especially in the developing economies like Nigeria. The optimum social media advertising should help to improve customer engagement, boost sales performance, boost brand awareness and help SMEs to be more competitive. But the evidence shows that many SMEs have different types of growth with their active presence on social media platforms, which may suggest that the efficiency of social media advertising varies in a business environment and the context in which they operate. The success of social media ads is contingent on how businesses are leveraging the digital marketing opportunities they have (Eze et al., 2021). Similarly, Owolabi et al. (2024) indicated that the performance of organizations and business growth are often affected by difference in advertising strategy. This results in uncertainty on the real impact of social media advertising on the development of SMEs and the need for empirical research.
While the existing literature had extensively studied social media advertisement and SME performance in the various locations, little empirical work has been done in assessing its impact on the growth of SMEs in Aba, Abia State where the entrepreneurial activities form a major part of the local economic activities. While existing research has offered insights into the link between digital marketing and business performance, it has not been adequate in providing information on the effect of social media advertising in the specific commercial setting of Aba and the improvement of SMEs. Inwang et al. (2025) have found that there are differences between business environments in terms of their adoption and application of digital marketing practices. In the same way, Ibrahim et al. (2024) pointed out that the results of digital advertising strategies depend on contextual variations. Thus this study aims at this empirical gap to determine the effects of social media advertising on the growth of SMEs in Aba of Abia state, Nigeria so as to provide evidence that will aid in the acquisition of knowledge on the field and for informed decision making of businesses.
1.3 Objective of the Study
