ABSTRACT
This study examined the effect of work on nursing practice, using Holy Field Hospital in Mosholashi, Lagos, as a case study. The study specifically was aimed at evaluating the influence of workload on nurses' job satisfaction in Holy Field Hospital in Mosholashi, Lagos State; evaluating the influence of staffing levels on patient care quality in Holy Field Hospital in Mosholashi, Lagos State; evaluating the influence of work environment on nursing performance in Holy Field Hospital in Mosholashi, Lagos State; and evaluating the influence of administrative support on the overall quality of nursing performance in Holy Field Hospital in Mosholashi, Lagos State. A descriptive survey research design was employed for the study. The population comprised 92 nurses working at Holy Field Hospital in Mosholashi, Lagos State. A stratified sampling technique was used to select respondents from the hospital’s nursing staff. The data was collected using a structured questionnaire designed to capture responses related to each research question. The instrument used in this study was a Likert-scale questionnaire with five options (Strongly Agree, Agree, Undecided, Disagree, and Strongly Disagree) to assess the perceptions of nurses regarding workload, staffing levels, work environment, and administrative support. While the hypothesis was tested using the Pearson Correlation statistical tool, SPSS v23. The findings revealed that workload significantly impacts nurses' job satisfaction, with 32 respondents strongly agreeing that heavy workloads lead to stress and reduced satisfaction. Staffing levels were found to play a critical role in patient care quality, as 35 nurses strongly agreed that adequate staffing contributes to better outcomes. Similarly, 34 respondents strongly agreed that a conducive work environment enhances nursing performance, while 37 strongly agreed that administrative support motivates nurses and improves performance. The study recommends that hospital management should address workload-related issues, improve staffing levels, create a conducive work environment, and strengthen administrative support to improve nursing practice, job satisfaction, and patient care quality.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION (Preview)
1.1 Background to the Study
As healthcare organizations endeavor to enhance the quality of care and guarantee superior patient outcomes, the influence of work on nursing practice is becoming increasingly significant. Work burden is one of the most significant factors that affects how well nurses perform. The capacity of nurses to provide high-quality care is directly impacted by the physical and mental fatigue they frequently experience as a result of their heavy burdens. Burnout and diminished attention to patient requirements may result from the pressure to manage multiple patients, perform complex tasks, and handle emergencies in high-volume environments (Smith & Williams, 2022; Johnson & Lee, 2021). The demands placed on each nurse are exacerbated by the insufficient personnel levels at Holy Field Hospital in Mosholashi, Lagos, resulting in frequent overburdening. As a result, this can lead to increased tension, dissatisfaction, and work hours for nurses, which may impact their work performance and patient care outcomes (Ogunleye et al., 2020; Ajayi & Tunde, 2023). Furthermore, the critical necessity of effective workload management in nursing practice is underscored by the correlation between excessive workloads and increased medical errors, patient dissatisfaction, and high turnover rates (Bello et al., 2021).

Another critical factor that impacts nursing practice is staffing levels. The quality of care that is delivered in hospitals is significantly influenced by the competence of the nursing personnel. Insufficient nursing personnel results in excessive workloads for individual nurses, which are linked to increased tension, burnout, and decreased attention to detail (Adedeji & Oladipo, 2022). Nurses are frequently designated an excessive number of patients at Holy Field Hospital due to staffing shortages, which results in a higher probability of errors and challenges in prioritizing care (Ahmed & Salau, 2020). Research has demonstrated that sufficient nurse staffing not only enhances job satisfaction and reduces burnout among nurses but also improves patient outcomes (Sanyaolu et al., 2021). In addition, it has been noted that nurses may be required to work extended shifts in situations where staffing levels are low, which further exacerbates fatigue and reduces performance (Amaka & Eze, 2022). It is essential to ensure that employment levels are in accordance with patient demands in order to maintain high standards of care and support nurses in their responsibilities (Ekpenyong et al., 2023).

Nursing practice is significantly influenced by the work environment. The performance and satisfaction of nurses are significantly influenced by a work environment that is conducive, which includes adequate facilities, equipment, and organizational culture. In a supportive and well-resourced environment, nurses are more likely to provide optimal care and experience less tension (Olufemi et al., 2020). In contrast, the job performance of nurses can be adversely affected, and high attrition rates can result from an unfavorable work environment at Holy Field Hospital, which is defined by suboptimal safety standards, inadequate resources, and poor infrastructure (Adewale & Ijeoma, 2021). Insufficient apparatus, uncomfortable working conditions, and physical hazards in nursing environments have been demonstrated to induce additional stressors that impede their capacity to function efficiently (Babalola et al., 2021). Furthermore, nurses' performance is further compromised by work environments that are devoid of collaboration, communication, and effective leadership, which contribute to feelings of isolation and dissatisfaction (Umar et al., 2022). It is imperative to enhance nursing practice and guarantee high-quality patient care by nurturing a positive organizational culture, investing in infrastructure, and implementing safety measures to improve the work environment.

Another critical factor that influences nursing practice is administrative support. The efficacy of nurses' responsibilities can be either improved or compromised by the extent of support provided by hospital administration. Poor working conditions, inadequate resources, and inadequate training opportunities for nurses have been reported as consequences of inadequate administrative support at Holy Field Hospital (Ogunyemi et al., 2020). Research has demonstrated that job satisfaction and nursing performance are considerably enhanced by administrative support in the form of professional development, timely resource allocation, and recognition of nurses' contributions (Shittu et al., 2023). In contrast, the absence of robust administrative support can result in frustration among nurses, which will ultimately impact their work quality by making them feel overburdened and undervalued (Oloyede et al., 2022). Administrative leaders who are engaged and responsive to the needs of nursing staff are more likely to cultivate a positive and productive work environment, which has a direct effect on patient care (Fashola & Awotunde, 2021). Consequently, administrative support is a fundamental component of a healthcare environment that is well-functioning, enabling nurses to provide high-quality treatment to patients.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Nursing practice is significantly impacted by several occupational characteristics, such as workload, staffing ratios, work environment, and administrative support. At Holyfield Nursing Home in Alagbado, Lagos, these factors significantly influence the quality of care delivered to patients. Excessive workloads can result in heightened stress and burnout among nurses, negatively impacting both performance and patient outcomes. Falguera et al. (2021) discovered that insufficient nurse staffing and heightened workload decreased the quality of nursing care. Maghsoud et al. (2022) also found that elevated workload stress correlated with increased intent to resign and diminished job satisfaction. These findings emphasize the necessity of task management to preserve superior standards of nursing care.

Staffing numbers are a crucial determinant affecting nursing practice. Inadequate staffing frequently leads to elevated patient-to-nurse ratios, causing nurses to become overloaded and compromising patient care. Silva et al. (2020) identified the nurse practice environment and workload as predictors of nursing care neglect in Brazilian critical care units. This underscores the necessity for sufficient manpower to guarantee thorough patient care. In the context of Holyfield Nursing Home, maintaining optimal staffing numbers is crucial for improving nursing performance and patient satisfaction.

The work environment profoundly influences nurses' job happiness and performance. A conducive work environment promotes collaboration and alleviates stress, resulting in improved patient outcomes. Al Sabei et al. (2021) established that supportive supervision is a factor influencing job satisfaction. A deficiency in cooperation may result in heightened workloads, absenteeism, burnout, and diminished job satisfaction (Bragadóttir et al., 2023). Consequently, fostering a healthy work atmosphere at Holyfield Nursing Home is essential for enhancing nursing practice.

Administrative support is essential for nursing performance. Effective leadership and supportive policies can improve job satisfaction and diminish turnover intentions among nurses. Alharbi et al. (2020) discovered that the correlation between nurse participation in hospital affairs and the intention to depart was mediated by emotional weariness and job satisfaction. This indicates that engaging nurses in decision-making and offering sufficient administrative support can enhance retention and performance. Enhancing administrative support at Holyfield Nursing Home could mitigate issues about nurse retention and performance. Despite the essential significance these elements play in nursing practice, there is a scarcity of research examining their specific influence inside private healthcare facilities in Lagos, such as Holyfield Nursing Home. This study seeks to address this gap by analysing the impact of workload, staffing levels, work environment, and administrative assistance on nursing performance in this context.
