ABSTRACT
The aim of this study is focused on the effect of total quality management and employee performance using Zenith Bank Plc as a case study. The study specifically was carried out to examine the influence of continuous improvement practices on employee productivity at Zenith Bank Plc, assess the impact of customer focus on the quality of employee service delivery in Zenith Bank Plc, investigate the impact of employee training and development on employee efficiency at Zenith Bank Plc, and determine the impact of effective communication and teamwork on employee overall output in Zenith Bank Plc. The research adopted the survey descriptive design, and with the aid of Taro Yamane, the researcher selected two hundred and fifty-six (256) participants. A self-structured questionnaire was issued to the respondent, from which one hundred and fifty-six (156) responses were retrieved and validated for the study. The study made use of descriptive analysis, where data from the field survey was analyzed using simple percentages, means, and standard deviations presented in frequencies and tables. While the hypotheses were tested using the ANOVA statistical tool SPSS v23. Findings of the study reveal that continuous improvement practices, including regular process evaluations and innovation-driven enhancements, are key in improving employee productivity. These practices help streamline workflows, reduce task completion times, and motivate employees by fostering a culture of constant development. Additionally, customer-focused approaches were found to have a profound impact on service delivery quality. Understanding customer needs and responding to feedback enables employees to provide tailored, high-quality services that increase customer satisfaction. Employee training and development emerged as essential for improving efficiency, with skill-based training and continuous learning initiatives playing a critical role in reducing errors and optimizing task management. Moreover, effective communication and teamwork were identified as key contributors to overall employee output, enhancing coordination, problem-solving, and accountability within the workforce. Therefore, the study recommends that comprehensive sexual education should be incorporated into the curricula of schools. Banks Plc should institutionalize regular process evaluations to consistently identify and eliminate inefficiencies. They should also foster a culture of innovation to encourage creative problem-solving and continuous development. Thus, the bank should implement customer feedback mechanisms to regularly gather insights and adapt services accordingly. Customer-focused training programs should be conducted periodically to enhance employee-client interactions and service quality.

INTRODUCTION (Preview)
1.1 Background to the Study
Total Quality Management is a significant quality enhancement paradigm in the contemporary corporate environment. Total quality management is among the various quality factors considered to enhance organizational performance (Asenge, Lubem, Adudu, & Torough, 2023). This organizational method is ascribed to the increasing competitiveness in the corporate landscape to capture clients. To augment competitive standing and boost corporate performance, firms globally, regardless of size or sector, have used complete quality principles (Ayodeji, Emmanuel, & Olajiire, 2021). Ibegbulem (2021) observed that numerous analyses on Total Quality Management have been acknowledged across various enterprises.
Total Quality Management (TQM) is characterized by executing tasks as intended from the outset and assessing performance based on customer or beneficiary feedback regarding their level of satisfaction with the work (Chebeni, 2020). Total Quality Management (TQM) is a management philosophy that seeks to perpetually better products, services, and processes by prioritizing customer wants and expectations to improve customer satisfaction and staff performance (Kamna & Ilkhanizadeh, 2022).
The use of Total Quality Management (TQM) has become a significant determinant of employee performance, fostering a favorable work culture and improving productivity. Total Quality Management (TQM) is a managerial strategy aimed at ongoing enhancement of all organizational processes, prioritizing customer happiness, staff involvement, and long-term sustainability (Nderitu, Gakobo, & Ochieng, 2023). This methodology incorporates fundamental principles, namely employee empowerment, collaboration, and ongoing enhancement, that collectively foster a more unified and driven workforce. TQM aligns corporate objectives with employee contributions, cultivating a shared responsibility for quality, hence enhancing operational efficiency and customer service concurrently (Omotayo et al., 2020).
Nwakoby, Okoye, and Anugwu (2023) assert that TQM's emphasis on quality management principles such as customer focus, employee training, and process standardization positively impacts work-related attitudes, including job satisfaction, engagement, and organizational commitment. When effectively applied, these principles promote active employee participation in problem-solving and decision-making, hence enhancing their commitment to company objectives. Continuous improvement and problem-prevention techniques foster a sense of ownership and engagement among employees, resulting in enhanced productivity and performance outcomes (Sirma, Misoi, & Omillo, 2023).
Management must acknowledge that Total Quality Management will not occur inadvertently. Total Quality Management (TQM) is a systematic approach that encompasses individuals, systems, and auxiliary tools and methodologies. Quality must become ingrained in financial institutions as a fundamental principle, commencing with employee happiness. Total Quality Management, despite being a relatively recent development, holds significant importance in the banking sector. This management concept has emerged from organizations' necessity for ongoing quality enhancement and the vital significance of heightened profitability and survival amid competitive pressures in the banking sector. This begins with understanding and fulfilling customers' fundamental needs, followed by equipping workers with the necessary skills to achieve excellence (Olusanjo, 2023).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The research problem centers on the challenges faced by Zenith Bank Plc in fully implementing Total Quality Management (TQM) within the Nigerian banking sector. Despite the recognized potential of TQM to enhance service quality, operational efficiency, and employee satisfaction, Zenith Bank struggles with several key issues. Employee reluctance to embrace change and inconsistent managerial support create significant barriers to the successful integration of TQM principles. Additionally, the complex nature of banking operations further complicates the seamless adoption of TQM across all levels of the organization. There is also a critical need to tailor TQM frameworks to the specific requirements of the Nigerian banking sector, as generic models may not address the unique operational and cultural dynamics of the bank. This study seeks to investigate the impact of these challenges on employee performance and the overall effectiveness of TQM implementation at Zenith Bank, aiming to provide insights into how these barriers can be overcome to achieve the intended benefits of TQM.
