1.1 Background of the Study
Consumer behaviour is important in everyday household life because individuals or families make decisions about what to buy, what to spend, which brands to buy and how to react to information that is available in the marketplace all the time. Today, households are bombarded with all kinds of products and services, advertising and social influences, so making informed consumer decisions is of great importance. Kiani, Muhammad, Hussain (2020) said that education affects consumer behaviour as it enhances consumers' knowledge and ability to make right choices. This increasing significance of informed consumption gives an overall backdrop to a consideration of the role of Family and Consumer Education in influencing consumer behaviour in households.
Family and Consumer Education is concerned with developing the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes required for individuals and families to manage resources effectively and participate responsibly in the marketplace. The family is an important context where individuals learn about money management, about consumption and about product choice and purchasing. According to Sheng (2022), the financial socialization within the family is an important factor in shaping financial behaviours and enhancing consumer financial well-being. In the same way, Novitasari, Wardoyo, and Andayani (2024) discovered that economic education in the family has implications for consumptive behavior. These views indicate that the learning taking place in the family could impact the ability to make responsible consumption choices and how individuals in the home manage the resources that are available to them.
Consumer awareness and protection are important dimensions of responsible consumer behaviour because consumers need adequate knowledge to understand product information, recognize their rights, identify unfair practices and make informed choices. According to Shu'ara (2021), consumer education can be one of the strategies that can be employed in the maintenance of human rights of consumers and their protection in Nigeria. Oranusi et al. (2021) in another study highlighted on the importance of consumer education and information in reinforcing consumer protection in the Nigerian pharmaceutical industry. In addition, Nnubia and Wagbara (2022) found the importance of consumer education in assisting consumers to cope with challenges faced in the market. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that consumer education can improve the consumers' awareness and ability in protecting consumers' interests.
The influence of Family and Consumer Education is also important in household budgeting and spending habits. Consumers should distinguish their needs and wants, prioritise spending, plan spending and resources, and avoid unnecessary spending. These behaviours can be fostered through family economic education, which can help educate people on financial management and responsible consumption. Novanda and Prakoso (2024) suggested that there is a relationship between family economic education and economic literacy with consumptive behaviour, while Sheng (2022) explained that family financial socialization is related to consumer financial well-being. These results indicate that knowledge gained in the household may impact consumer spending patterns and resource allocation.
Another crucial aspect of consumer behaviour is brand evaluation and brand selection. Consumers may need to explore and evaluate various brands on attributes such as quality, price, reputation, availability and perceived value before deciding what to buy. Family, culture and other social factors may also play a role in such decisions, however. Durmaz and Gündüz (2021) explained that social factors are significant influences on consumer behaviour, while Anyanwu and Chiana (2022) demonstrated the influence of socio-cultural factors on consumption behaviour. Olugbamigbe (2024) also revealed that consumer education, family and reference groups are also determinants in the choice of aso ebi in the Southwest region of Nigeria. The findings of this study show that the social environment around the consumer and consumer knowledge have an effect on the brand evaluation and selection.
Purchasing decisions are similarly influenced by knowledge, family experiences and social factors. Consumers with relevant information will be more likely to consider alternatives before spending their financial resources. The results of Orji, Emmanuel, and Ayishatu (2023) showed that social factors affect the buying behaviour of consumers, and Nkan, Asa, and Nwonye (2025) investigated the correlation between brand awareness and buying behaviour of students in Nigeria. But equally, Bitkowska et al. (2022) concluded that the perceptions of consumers can affect buying intentions towards family businesses. Moreover, Kilders, Caputo and Liverpool-Tasie (2020) demonstrated that cultural factors affect food selection among Nigerians. These results show that the factors affecting the purchase decisions are education, awareness, social relationship and cultural consideration are combined.
Evidence from Nigeria further supports the importance of consumer education in shaping consumption practices. Anugwa et al. (2023) explored the level of knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of food production systems among consumers in Nigeria and Edache and Joegelleh (2025) concluded that consumer education programmes can affect agricultural consumer behaviour in Makurdi Metropolis. Ehinmilorin (2021) found that culture, tradition & ethnicity affects consumption pattern among consumers in Nigeria. Kurniawati, Sulaeman, and Ardiansyah (2025) also showed that family education and peer influence are significant to green consumers' behaviours. These studies taken together indicate that consumer behaviour is multi-dimensional and that education has an interactive relationship with family and social influences in determining consumption practices.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Irrespective of the evidence supporting the importance of consumer education and family influences, many households may still experience difficulties in applying consumer knowledge to everyday marketplace decisions. There are some consumers who may have limited awareness of their rights, poor budgeting habits, inability to compare competing brands or base purchasing decisions primarily on the influence of social/cultural factors. This can lead to wrong purchases and wrong products and can put them at risk of being misled in the marketplace. The role of consumer education to overcome such issues is shown in Nnubia and Wagbara (2022) and Shu’ara (2021).
The consequences of inadequate consumer knowledge extend beyond individual consumers to affect the financial management and welfare of households. Consumer knowledge and decision-making skills may be reduced where there is a lack of these skills, which in turn affects the ability to manage resources, compare alternatives, defend their rights and make purchasing decisions responsibly. The study is therefore necessitated to empirically investigate the influence of Family and Consumer Education on consumer awareness and protection, budgeting and spending, brand evaluation and selection and purchasing decisions of households in Ethiope West Local Government Area, Delta State which has not been adequately studied.
