ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine the role of Pidgin as a means of communication in unifying students using Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State as a case study. The study was specifically carried out to examine the extent to which Nigerian Pidgin is used as a means of communication among students in Enugu East Local Government Area, assess the role of Nigerian Pidgin in facilitating interpersonal communication among students in Enugu East Local Government Area, determine the influence of Nigerian Pidgin on promoting social integration and unity among students in Enugu East Local Government Area, and examine the role of Nigerian Pidgin in reducing language barriers among students from diverse ethnic and linguistic backgrounds in Enugu East Local Government Area. The study employed the descriptive survey research design. The study population comprised students of selected secondary schools and tertiary institutions located within Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, while a total of 345 respondents were selected as sample size using the Taro Yamane formula. Out of the 345 questionnaires distributed, 328 were returned and 328 were validated for analysis. The questionnaire was used for data collection, while the data collected were analyzed using frequency tables, mean scores, standard deviation, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) with the aid of SPSS version 25. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that Nigerian Pidgin is extensively used as a means of communication among students with a grand mean above the cut-off mean of 3.00. The study also showed that Nigerian Pidgin plays a significant role in facilitating interpersonal communication among students with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.71, t = 18.22, P = .000. Likewise, Nigerian Pidgin was found to have a significant influence on promoting social integration and unity among students with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.74, t = 19.91, P = .000,  The study therefore recommends that educational institutions should encourage the constructive use of Nigerian Pidgin in promoting effective communication among students.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION (Preview)
1.1 Background to the Study
Communication plays a pivotal role in human life as it enables the exchange of ideas, values, feelings and social meaning between people and groups. Language is a symbolic tool which is essential for human societies in their social interactions, cultural continuity and collective identity formation. Language is not just a means of communicating information but also a tool for negotiating and maintaining social relationships and communal affiliations, as Adebayo et al. (2025) have pointed out. The presence of different languages in today's societies has also made language more important for social cohesion and for interpersonal relationships. Gordon and Ogbu (2023) argue that the language behaviours of urban communities can often influence collective experiences and help to build a shared identity for diverse groups. Likewise, Yakpo (2024) observes that contact languages are increasingly playing strategic roles in the communication of heterogeneous societies where the various language groups live together.

As more people from different social groups interacted, contact languages arose and grew that crossed ethnic and linguistic lines. Of the linguistic forms that have developed, pidgin languages are the ones that have become very dynamic means of communication as they provide the speaker with a relatively neutral and accessible means of communication. Mazzoli (2021) states that Nigerian Pidgin has evolved from a contact variety on the margins to a rich linguistic system which serves the communicative needs of millions of speakers. According to Okechukuwu Nlem Alwell and Dakoru (2025), Nigerian Pidgin (NP) is an emerging Lingua Franca with a lot of potentials in facilitating communication between people of different cultures and languages. This growing functionality is also reflected in the media and public communication. According to Nweke et al. (2024), Nigerian Pidgin has gained widespread acceptance in broadcasting, entertainment, and daily social interactions due to its simplicity and widespread understanding. John (2021) further noted that the use of Nigerian Pidgin in news dissemination is also increasing, which further indicates the effectiveness of the language in reaching linguistically diverse audience.

The use of Nigerian Pidgin has become more and more prominent in the communicative sphere, particularly in the educational and youth contexts where social interaction is often more of a cross-cutting than ethnic or native language. Education institutions are a microcosm of the larger society in Nigeria as they bring together children of diverse language, culture and region in a common environment. Emodi (2022) reported that the Nigerian undergraduates use Nigerian Pidgin as a common language for communicating with their peers because it is informal and inclusive. Similarly, Adekunle (2023) notes that Nigerian Pidgin helps to bring together heterogeneous audiences and make meaning social by making it accessible and relatable. The language's pedagogical relevance is also a topic in the educational literature. Based on the familiarity of Nigerian Pidgin with learners, James et al. (2023) argues that the Nigerian Pidgin has a great communicative potential for instructional interaction. Acka and Hassane (2025) also point out that the use of linguistic forms which promote participation and reciprocity in classroom interactions greatly enhances the effectiveness of the interaction.

The communicative and integrative features of Nigerian Pidgin are more prominent in the local education contexts where there are language differences and frequent communication between students. Enugu East Local Government Area consists of educational institutions with students from various ethnic groups and language backgrounds which provide a social environment where there is a need for mutual intelligibility and interpersonal relationship. Obiakor (2024) reported that language practices in multilingual educational settings have a huge impact on students' literacy experiences and patterns of social interaction. In the same vein, Oji et al. (2025) claim that multilingual school settings necessitate linguistic resources that promote interaction and cultural accommodation among learners. Nigerian Pidgin thus plays a significant role as a channel for communication, friend-making and shared social activities among students. Okon and Jarigbe (2024) also add that the level of usage of the Nigerian Pidgin by students shows that it is becoming more relevant in the educational environment. Therefore, the study of how far Nigerian Pidgin is used as a language of communication, how it helps in interpersonal relationship, how it promotes social integration and unity and how it helps to break the language barrier among students in Enugu East Local Government Area is an important academic research.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The multilingual nature of Nigeria has engendered a situation where children of different ethnic and language groups come into contact with each other daily in the schools. Nigerian Pidgin has become a common language of communication among young people and students in these settings. Emodi (2022) revealed that the use of Nigerian Pidgin by undergraduates is prevalent due to its easy accessibility and familiarity to the users. Likewise, Nweke et al. (2024) note that because of its wide understanding, the language has gained wide acceptance in various fields of communication. Despite its growing popularity amongst students, there is still not enough empirical evidence on the level of its usage amongst students in particular localities like Enugu East Local Government Area. However, the amount of location based information that is clear enough to establish how much Nigerian Pidgin is dominant in communication among the students in the area is inadequate.

The interpersonal communication among students is very important in the process of cooperation, friend formation and academic interaction in the educational environment. The use of Nigerian Pidgin in informal communication is due to the fact that it affords a convenient and less restricted language medium for the speakers to use. James et al. (2023) reported that Nigerian Pidgin is widely known among learners, which makes it have a high communicative value in the learning environment. Acka and Hassane (2025) also argue that the use of linguistic forms that promote active participation and mutual interaction enhances the effectiveness of communication. But, there is little empirical evidence that illuminates the role of Nigerian Pidgin in inter-personal communication among students in Enugu East Local Government Area. This lack of evidence leaves uncertainty about the communicative functions that the language serves in students' relationships and interactions.

In addition, social integration and unity continue to be significant aspects of a learning environment that is linguistically and culturally diverse. Nigerian Pidgin is sometimes seen as a relatively neutral language that can facilitate communication between people of different ethnic backgrounds. Okechukuwu Nlem Alwell and Dakoru (2025) observe that Nigerian Pidgin has become a lingua franca which fosters cross-linguistic communication in Nigeria. Gordon and Ogbu (2023) also state that language practices have a significant impact on social relations and collective experiences in various contexts. However, there is still a dearth of empirical data about the level of social integration, unity and reduction of language barriers among students in Enugu East Local Government Area as a result of the use of Nigerian Pidgin. This lack of evidence restricts the possibility of drawing well-informed conclusions about its role in developing inclusive relationships between linguistically diverse students.

This study thus becomes necessary as it aims at providing empirical evidence on the level of usage of Nigerian pidgin among students, the role of Nigerian pidgin in the facilitation of interpersonal communication, the influence of Nigerian pidgin in promoting social integration and unity and the contribution of Nigerian pidgin in reducing language barriers in Enugu East Local Government Area. The results of this study are hoped to contribute to the existing knowledge of language use and social interaction of students in multilingual education settings.

1.3 Objective of the Study
