INTRODUCTION (Preview)
1.1 Background of the Study
The knowledge-driven economy has always relied on information systems to drive the development of modern organizations, especially when moving from an industrial economy to a knowledge-based economy. The early organizational structures, in their record keeping, communication and coordination activities, used to be entirely manual processes, with some constraints in terms of speed and accuracy in decision making. But as digital technologies emerged, the organizations started moving towards structured systems to manage and process information in an effective manner. The rise and development of digital infrastructure played an important role in the way organizations collect, store and use data for strategic purposes, as indicated by Ngwane and Hlophe (2021). Yauri (2022) also stated that information-based environment is now a strategic area for the acquisition of competitive advantage in many industries. Ibrahim et al. (2025) also noted that the incorporation of technology into the organizational process has changed the way administrators run their operations, and Ali et al. (2024) highlighted the ongoing transformation of operational standards due to digitalization. Temple et al. (2026) further emphasized the critical role of systematic information flows in maintaining coordination and productivity in today's dynamic organizational contexts.
Management Information System (MIS) is an organized system that collects, processes, stores and disseminates information to assist management decision making. It brings together both human resources and technological resources and procedures to make sure that the necessary information is provided in a timely and usable way. Lawal and Afolayan (2023) stated that MIS is an integrated system that enabling planning, control and operational functions in organisations. MIS is a combination of hardware, software, data resources and human expertise for improved organizational coordination as explained by Adegoroye et al. (2025). Egwuonwu et al. (2024) highlighted that MIS enabled data processing with accuracy, while Silas et al. (2025) pointed out that MIS helped to improve internal communication and reporting. Obiki-Osafiele et al. (2024) also reported that MIS facilitated the conversion of raw data into useful information to support action by management and institutional planning processes at various levels of the organization.
Organizational performance is the ability of an organization to operate efficiently and effectively to fulfill its objectives and to use the available resources optimally. Typically measured in terms of productivity, service quality, profitability and operational efficiency. Paul and Malachy (2025) noted that technological tools have been gradually integrated into performance measurement systems to improve accuracy in evaluations. Aigbe and Onuoha (2025) found that better information flow helped to enhance the level of coordination and allocation of resources in organisations. Ibrahim et al. (2025) pointed out that the use of structured information systems led to better decision-making and faster responses, whereas Ali et al. (2024) reported that organizations utilizing digital tools tended to have higher efficiency. Temple et al. (2026) also found that IS alignment with the goals of the organisation boosted strategic execution and performance results in various sectors.
Organizational activities in Aba, Abia State are indicated by small, medium and large scale enterprises in commerce, manufacturing and services. In this context, the implementation of Management Information Systems is gaining more and more significance, given the desire of organizations to enhance the coordination of operations and the effectiveness of their management. Based on the study of Yauri (2022), the business environment that has implemented information systems in the region has an administrative organization and resource management that is better. Based on the findings, Lawal and Afolayan (2023) noted that MIS implementation facilitated business continuity and structured decision making in the development of the economy. Likewise, Egwuonwu et al. (2024) and Silas et al. (2025) found that information-based systems provided increased organizational responsiveness to operational demands. Adegoroye et al. (2025) also pointed out that the use of MIS in local business applications helped to enhance the integration of workflow. The Aba story in Abia State is a typical example of the way in which organisations are beginning to work towards aligning information systems with the operational systems so as to produce better performance.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Today, organizations function in a growing digital space in which information is an important asset for planning, coordination and decision making. Recently, focus has shifted to the effects of technological systems on administrative structures and the effectiveness of the organisation. Ibrahim et al. (2025) and Ali et al. (2024) report that digital integration has also guided the structuring of internal processes and the handling of operational data to this day. Likewise, Adegoroye et al. (2025) and Obiki-Osafiele et al. (2024) stressed the need for an information system that has a structured framework for better data management and coordination of management. Even with these advances, an extent of adoption and utilization of Management Information System in different organizational contexts, especially in developing economic contexts, can be observed. This variation seems to indicate that more studies should be conducted to better understand the role and implications of MIS in practical setting and its impact on organizational performance in particular, local commercial business environment like Aba in Abia state.
Many organizations, especially in the growing commercial hubs, can be seen that there is a mismatch between the expected benefits of a Management Information Systems and the results that are actually being obtained. Although MIS aims to boost efficiency and streamline the flow of communication and support decision-making processes, there are some organizations that still suffer from delays in information processing, poor coordination, and different information management practices. While MIS can enhance organizational operations, its effectiveness is determined by its degree of integration and the competence of its users, Egwuonwu et al. (2024) and Silas et al. (2025) pointed out. Also, Lawal and Afolayan (2023) and Aigbe and Onuoha (2025) pointed out that the inability to implement a MIS system effectively can constrain the benefits to the performance of an organization. The best possible scenario is that MIS is completely embedded in the business and is providing the information to managers in real-time, the reports are accurate and the decisions are better. But today's situation in most organizations of Aba, Abia state show discrepancies in usage and effectiveness, thus, there is a gap in between the availability of the system and the resultant performance improvement.
A gap in knowledge and practice is the lack of empirical knowledge of the impact of Management Information Systems on the performance of organizations in particular local settings like Aba in Abia State. While some previous studies showed that there is a relationship between Information Systems and the efficiency of the organization, there is still not enough information in how it works at the enterprise level in emerging business environments. Previous studies (Yauri 2022; Temple et al. 2026) found that contextual factors play a pivotal role in determining the effectiveness of information systems, but not many studies have explored localized organizational scenarios. The aim of this research is therefore to investigate how far MIS influences the performance of organisations and how the utilisation of the system relates to measurable improvements in the performance of organisations such as productivity, efficiency and quality of decision making in Aba. The research aims to fill this void and offer context-specific recommendations that can inform better implementation, and increase effectiveness of the organizations within the study area.
