ABSTRACT
The aim of this study is focused on peer pressure and involvement in online betting among youths in Choba community. The study specifically was carried out to determine the extent of involvement in online betting among youths in Choba community, investigate the primary factors behind youths’ participation in online betting in Choba community, assess the influence of peer pressure on online betting participation, identify the key sources of peer pressure that contribute to online betting behaviors among youths in Choba community, assess the impact of online betting influenced by peer pressure on youths in Choba community, and proffer strategies aimed at reducing the impact of peer pressure on online betting among youths in Choba community. With the aid of the Yamane sampling technique, the researcher selected two hundred and twenty-two (222) participants. A self-structured questionnaire was issued to the respondent of which two hundred and eleven (211) responses were retrieved and validated for the study. The study made use of descriptive analysis and inferential statistics where data from field survey was analyzed using simple percentages, means, and standard deviations presented in frequencies and tables. Hypothesis test was conducted using ANOVA Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS v.23). Findings of the study reveal that while many youths perceive online betting as a form of entertainment or an avenue for financial relief, the long-term implications ranging from financial losses to addiction are often underestimated. Also, the findings highlight a pervasive lack of awareness about the risks associated with online betting, coupled with inadequate parental guidance and weak regulatory measures. The normalization of betting culture, particularly through peer influence, is not only shaping attitudes but also reinforcing risky behaviors among youths. Socioeconomic challenges, including unemployment and limited recreational opportunities, exacerbate the problem, driving many young individuals to seek solace or opportunities in betting. Therefore, the study recommends that schools and community organizations should design and implement educational campaigns to inform youths about the risks associated with online betting and how peer pressure influences their decision-making. Thus youth groups and community initiatives should encourage the development of positive peer interactions by organizing team-building activities, sports competitions, and skill-building workshops.

INTRODUCTION (Preview)
1.1 Background to the Study
Due to the recent economic hardship experienced globally, most people are finding it difficult to meet their basic needs. The unemployment and underemployment rate is on the increase, business is collapsing, and the depression rate is increasing daily, which all result in people being involved in different risky behaviors to survive (Chiedozie, 2019). In recent times, one of the consumer risky behaviour is online betting as a means of survival and recreation. Online betting is the exercise of staking of money or something of value (often referred as the stake) on an event with an uncertain outcome with the hope of winning more than what one stakes (Omanchi, & Okpamen, 2018). The rise of betting industries may be attributed to digital sports betting exceeding most other types of betting and concentrating on the active young market (Rockloff, Browne, Russell, Hing, & Greer, 2019).
Online betting has emerged as a major concern among youths, driven by its its ease of access and the promise of quick cash benefits. The digital shift has transformed the betting industry, with multiple websites and mobile applications providing a diverse range of gambling options. These platforms frequently employ aggressive marketing methods, such as targeted adverts and promotional incentives, to attract youthful members. The convenience of internet betting, combined with its perceived low risk and big payoff, makes it especially tempting to the younger population.
In recent years, online betting has grown in popularity, particularly among youths. The proliferation of smartphones, simple internet access, and the digitalisation of all parts of daily life have created a favourable atmosphere for the expansion of online betting platforms. These platforms provide a diverse range of gambling alternatives, including sports betting and casino games, which are increasingly enticing to young people. The rapid advancement of technology has been a driving force behind the growing interest of young people in online betting. With the widespread availability of smartphones and high-speed internet, youths can now easily access online betting platforms. According to Wheatcroft (2020), the number of smartphone users worldwide is expected to reach 6.8 billion by 2025, a significant increase from the 3.6 billion recorded in 2016. This exponential surge in smartphone usage has fostered the rise of mobile betting apps, making it easier for adolescents to place bets anytime and anywhere.
Economic aspirations play an important part in attracting youths to online betting. In numerous regions, youths suffer economic issues such as unemployment and underemployment, prompting them to seek additional sources of income. Online betting, with its promise of speedy and big payouts, appears to be an appealing option. According to a study conducted by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in 2022, economic pressures and the lure of possible monetary advantages are important motivators for youths participation in online gambling. Peer influence and social networks have a substantial impact on youths' participation in online betting. The urge to fit in with friends, as well as the influence of social media, have contributed to the popularity of online gambling. Celebrities and influencers frequently advertise and endorse on social media platforms, glamorising the betting experience and persuading young people to engage. The normalisation of betting through these means may promote participation among impressionable teenagers.
Peer pressure is a powerful social force that has a substantial impact on individual behaviours and attitudes, particularly among youths. It refers to how a peer group influences a person's views, values, or behaviours in order to comply with group norms. This tendency can have both beneficial and negative consequences, although it frequently emerges as dangerous behaviour, such as substance misuse, delinquency, and, more recently, participation in online betting. The introduction of the internet and digital technologies has facilitated the growth of online betting platforms, making gambling more accessible and appealing to younger groups.
The influence of peer pressure on youth engagement in online betting is a growing concern. Adolescents and young adults are in a developmental stage where they are particularly susceptible to peer influences due to their desire for social acceptance and belonging. Studies have shown that peers can significantly impact gambling behaviors among youths. For instance, a study by Derevensky and Gupta (2019) found that young individuals are more likely to engage in gambling activities if their friends also participate in such behaviors. This peer influence can create a social environment where online betting is normalized and even glamorized.
The targeted marketing tactics of betting organisations, which frequently use social media channels to reach their audience, further exacerbate the surge in youth online betting. Young people commonly engage with their peers on these platforms, which leaves them open to peer pressure and the persuasive advertising tactics utilised by gambling corporations. Hing et al.(2021) research from 2021 shows how peer-to-peer distribution of gambling content and social media marketing might raise the risk of youth online betting.
Furthermore, the psychological processes that underpin peer pressure add to its powerful influence on youth gambling behaviours. Adolescents are more willing to take chances and seek out new experiences, sometimes underestimating the potential negative outcomes. The immediate social benefits of conforming to peer group behaviours, such as receiving approval and raising one's social status, can exceed the perceived risks of online betting (Hing et al., 2021).
Moreover, the accessibility and anonymity provided by online betting platforms can amplify the impact of peer pressure. Unlike traditional gambling venues, online platforms allow youths to engage in betting activities discreetly and without the need for physical presence. This anonymity can reduce the perceived social and psychological barriers to gambling, making it easier for youths to succumb to peer pressure and participate in online betting. According to Griffiths et al. (2020), the ease of access and the privacy of online gambling environments contribute significantly to the growing prevalence of online betting among young people.
Youth involvement in internet betting has become a major societal issue in Nigeria, causing worry among legislators, educators, and families. The expansion of online betting sites, combined with ubiquitous internet access and the availability of smartphones, has made gambling more accessible to youth. This ease of access has led to an increase in participation rates among young Nigerians, many of whom are enticed by the promise of quick and significant financial benefits..
The effects of youths engaging in internet betting can be serious and far-reaching. Problem gambling among youths can have a variety of negative consequences, including financial troubles, mental health issues, and scholastic challenges. The normalisation of gambling behaviours among peers can feed a cycle of risky behaviour and addiction. To establish effective preventive and intervention efforts, policymakers, schools, and parents must first grasp the intricate relationship between peer pressure and online betting. Hence the need for this study.
1.2 Statement of the problem
The rise in online betting services has raised serious concerns around the world, particularly about their impact on youth. This is a complicated issue with economic, social, and psychological components. Several factors contribute to the popularity of online betting among young people, including increased internet accessibility, aggressive marketing methods by betting organisations, and the appeal of instant cash benefits. As a result, online betting has become an increasingly popular pastime among young people, leading to various adverse consequences that warrant urgent attention.
In Nigeria, peer pressure and its impact on youth participation in online betting have surfaced as major concerns, mirroring broader global trends and local socioeconomic realities. Peer pressure, defined as the influence applied by one's peers to comply with specific behaviours, is becoming increasingly important in shaping young people's online betting habits in Nigeria. This problem is exacerbated by the rapid expansion of online betting platforms and the pervasiveness of digital technology, which has made betting activities more accessible and increased the power of peer influence.
According to recent studies, the appeal of online betting among Nigerian youths is strongly tied to peer dynamics. According to Eze and Okonkwo (2023), social networks and peer groups play a significant role in the adoption of betting habits, with many young people engaging in online betting to fit in with their social circles or acquire social prestige. This peer-induced engagement frequently ignores the potential consequences linked with online gambling, such as financial insecurity and psychological discomfort. According to the study, peer pressure is highly associated with increasing betting behaviours, as youths are more likely to gamble when their friends are doing the same (Eze & Okonkwo, 2023).
Furthermore, the accessibility and marketing strategies of online betting platforms exacerbate this issue. As noted by Oladipo and Akinola (2024), online betting companies frequently target young audiences with promotions and bonuses, creating a compelling environment that reinforces peer-driven behaviors. This commercial approach not only normalizes betting among youths but also integrates it into the social fabric of their daily lives, making it challenging for individuals to resist participation. The intersection of marketing tactics and peer pressure underscores a critical area of concern, as it amplifies the risk of widespread gambling addiction among Nigerian youths (Oladipo & Akinola, 2024).
Moreover, the socio-economic conditions in Nigeria contribute to the susceptibility of youths to online betting. The economic challenges faced by many young Nigerians, including high unemployment rates and limited access to economic opportunities, often lead them to view betting as a potential solution to their financial problems. This vulnerability is further exploited by peer pressure, which can create an illusion of quick financial gain and social acceptance through betting activities (Nwachukwu & Chukwu, 2023). As a result, the interplay of economic hardship and peer influence fosters a risky environment where online betting becomes an appealing, albeit detrimental, option for many youths. It is against this backdrop that this study will be investigating peer pressure and involvement in online betting among youths in Choba community.
