ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine the impact of social media on the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises. The study was specifically carried out to determine the effect of social media on brand awareness of SMEs in Nigeria, assess the influence of social media on customer engagement among SMEs in Nigeria, examine the influence of social media on market expansion of SMEs in Nigeria, and examine the impact of social media usage on sales growth of SMEs in Nigeria. The study employed the descriptive survey research design. Hence, the questionnaire was used for data collection, while the data collected were analyzed using frequency tables, mean scores, and standard deviation. The hypotheses test was conducted using multiple regression analysis. A total population of 1,248 registered SMEs in Lagos State formed the study population while a sample size of 303 was determined using Taro Yamane formula. The sampling technique adopted was multi-stage sampling which included stratified and convenience sampling methods. The participants consisted of owners and managers of SMEs across retail, services, agriculture, and manufacturing sectors in Lagos State. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings reveal that social media has a significant effect on brand awareness (β = 0.31, p = 0.000), customer engagement (β = 0.27, p = 0.000), market expansion (β = 0.33, p = 0.000), and sales growth (β = 0.24, p = 0.000) of SMEs in Nigeria. The model further showed a strong relationship between variables with R = 0.81, R² = 0.66, and F = 138.72 (p = 0.000), indicating statistical significance. The study therefore recommends that SMEs should intensify their use of social media platforms for marketing purposes, adopt consistent digital branding strategies, and invest in targeted online advertising to enhance visibility, customer engagement, market expansion, and sales performance for sustainable business growth in Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION (Preview)
1.1 Background of the Study
The rise of social media has changed the business world by providing new avenues for communication, marketing, customer engagement and commercial transactions across the globe. In developed and developing economies, the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are leveraging social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, LinkedIn and X to boost visibility and organizational performance. Chatterjee et al. (2021) suggested that the marketing through social media has been an effective instrument for sustainable growth of business, especially for SMEs in a competitive environment. In the same line, Sharabati et al. (2024) described that digital marketing technologies have transformed the traditional marketing framework, allowing businesses to connect with their customers on real-time bases. Similarly, Qalati et al. (2021) held the view that utilizing social media plays a crucial role in optimizing SME performance with regard to communication, market responsiveness, and customer relationship management. As a result, social media has developed from a tool for communication to a critical business asset that can help enterprise development and competitiveness in the global markets.
From this global transformation, it can be seen that the use of social media as part of business operations is more related to brand awareness and market visibility of SMEs. Today, shoppers rely on a vast array of digital channels to find items, compare brands and decide on their buying process. Nwali and Ntegeeh (2022) noted that social media marketing has a great influence in boosting brand awareness of SMEs by enhancing the visibility of the SMEs and providing the platforms for frequent engagements with the target markets. It is supported by Oyekan (2022) who claimed that SMEs are using social media to create a recognizable business name and remain visible in dynamic markets. Moreover, Olugbodi (2022) stated that social media affords businesses the opportunity to share values of a brand to more people at a lower cost than conventional advertising. Amoah et al. (2021) further stated that strategic use of social media improves customer recognition and helps to develop sustainable enterprises. Therefore, the increasing significance of digital communication reinforces social media as an important tool for enhancing SMEs brand on the international stage.
Additionally, social media plays a crucial role in customer engagement and relationship management for SMEs, not just for brand awareness. Social media platforms are interactive, allowing businesses to engage in a two-way conversation with customers, which can help to build trust, loyalty, and engagement. According to Oni (2021), SMEs are increasingly using social media for corporate communication as it helps to gain instant feedback and improves customer-business relationship. Similarly, Ifeoma Grace et al. (2025) stated that SMEs in Nigeria can also benefit from customer engagement on social media, as this enhances customer satisfaction and increases the likelihood of repeat customers. Similarly, Olaleye et al. (2021) reported that social media competence has a significant impact on customers' satisfaction and the performance of the enterprise particularly in the era of digital transformation. Moreover, Ibrahim et al. (2024) highlighted that social networking sites enable SMEs to tailor their interactions and quickly address customer needs. This makes social media interaction a key element in business development plans in order for SMEs to stay more connected with their customers and be more relevant in the market.
In addition to customer engagement, social media has significantly contributed to market expansion and business outreach among SMEs. The geographical constraints have been eliminated as a result of the use of digital platforms, which allow companies to reach larger and more varied markets. Qalati et al. (2022) found that adopting SMM by SMEs in developing countries will increase adaptability and ability to access new market opportunities in organizations. Likewise, Ahmad et al. (2023) argued that social media fosters digital entrepreneurship by creating wider business networks and an enhanced involvement in the online market. In line with this, Ijomah et al. (2024) posited that innovative digital marketing strategies give SMEs competitive advantages to achieve their sustainable growth and market penetration. In addition, Mwaanga and Hapompwe (2024) described how the use of social media platforms leads to better business performances, wider customer base and better engagements in the market by SMEs. Thus, the rising of social media within SMEs operations are continuously reshaping market accessibility and enterprise growth in the current digital economy.
Thus, the impact of social media on sales growth and business performance has become an increasing focus of academic studies, especially in developing markets like Nigeria where SMEs are a major employer and economic stimulator. Lawal and Adejuwon (2023) hypothesized that social media marketing has a positive effect on sales performance of SMEs as it increases customers' awareness and patronage on the social media platform. Similarly, Benjamin (2025) explained that online marketing is a key factor that supports sales performance in the digital age as it gives business access to consumers and market information at any time. Likewise, Abinabo et al. (2025) also claimed that social media marketing can improve the performance of a firm provided there is adequate digital literacy amongst the SME operators. In Nigeria, a study by George et al. (2025) and Ogomegbunam (2023) also found that digital marketing and social media strategies are significant vehicles for the growth and survival of SMEs. Consequently, in Nigeria where digitalization is increasingly taking hold in various sectors, the increasing use of social media by SMEs makes it relevant to explore how they can be affected by social media in terms of brand awareness, customer engagement, market expansion, and sales growth.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are increasingly using social media platforms in Nigeria and all over the world, especially in marketing communication, customer relations and business expansion. It is hoped that the use of social media platforms will boost SMEs' brand awareness, improve engagement with customers, expand their markets, and increase their sales by continuously interacting with their customers and being visible in the market. Qalati et al. (2021) and Sharabati et al. (2024) showed that the adoption of social media has a positive impact on enterprise performance and organizational competitiveness. In the same vein, Nwali and Ntegeeh (2022) asserted that social media marketing is a key factor in improving brand awareness among SMEs, and that Lawal and Adejuwon (2023) reported that SMEs' usage of social media positively impacts their sales performance. At present, however, the situation of many SMEs in Nigeria shows that there has been a mixed response to the significance of using social media on their growth. For some SMEs social media can mean greater visibility and customer patronage, but for others, it's an issue of converting social media efforts into tangible metrics like ongoing customer engagement, market expansion and sales. This makes it uncertain the magnitude of the contribution of social media to the growth of SMEs in Nigeria.
Existing empirical studies have examined social media marketing and SME performance from different perspectives, including digital entrepreneurship, online marketing, and business sustainability. For example, Ogomegbunam (2023) explored the social media marketing strategies and business survival of SMEs in Delta State and Olakunle et al. (2024) examined social media marketing and SMEs' performance in South-West Nigeria. Thus, Abinabo et al. (2025) explored the moderating effect of digital literacy on performance, while Inwang et al. (2025) evaluated the social media marketing and SME performance in Delta State. Many of these studies focused on overall business performance but no study has investigated the four growth indicators (Brand awareness, Customer engagement, Market expansion, and Sales growth) in an integrated manner in the Nigerian SME sector. In addition, the study revealed that there is a gap in knowledge about the impact of social media on SME growth particularly in Nigeria due to differences in geographical focus and research dimensions. Thus, this study will attempt to bridge this gap by exploring in detail the role of social media in the development of SMEs in Nigeria by considering its effect on brand awareness, customer engagement, market expansion, and sales growth.
