ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine the corporate management and firm sustainability of telecommunication companies in Delta State. The study was specifically carried out to examine the effect of corporate governance practices on firm sustainability of telecommunication companies in Delta State, assess the influence of strategic leadership on the sustainability of telecommunication companies in Delta State, determine the effect of corporate social responsibility on firm sustainability in telecommunication companies in Delta State, examine the influence of risk management practices on the sustainability of telecommunication companies in Delta State, and assess the effect of financial management practices on firm sustainability in telecommunication companies in Delta State. The study employed the descriptive research design. The population of the study comprised employees of selected telecommunication companies operating in Delta State, specifically Globacom (Glo) and MTN Nigeria. A sample size of 205 respondents was determined using the Taro Yamane formula, while 190 validated copies of the questionnaire were used for the analysis. The multi-stage sampling technique involving stratified and convenience sampling methods was adopted for the selection of respondents. Hence, the questionnaire was used for data collection, while the data collected were analyzed using mean scores and standard deviation. The hypotheses were tested using multiple regression analysis with the aid of SPSS version 23. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that corporate governance practices have a significant effect on the firm sustainability of telecommunication companies in Delta State at β = 0.292, R² = 0.659, and p = .000. The study also showed that strategic leadership has a significant influence on the sustainability of telecommunication companies in Delta State at β = 0.257, R² = 0.659, p = .000. Likewise, corporate social responsibility has a significant effect on firm sustainability at β = 0.214, R² = 0.659, p = .001, while risk management practices significantly influenced sustainability at β = 0.182, R² = 0.659, p = .004. Furthermore, financial management practices significantly affected firm sustainability at β = 0.238, R² = 0.659, p = .000. The study therefore recommends that telecommunication companies should strengthen corporate governance structures, promote effective strategic leadership, increase investment in corporate social responsibility initiatives, and improve risk and financial management practices in order to enhance long-term sustainability and organizational performance.

1.1 Background of the Study
In modern economies, corporate organizations are important drivers of economic growth, job creation, innovation, and development in the society. As organizations are more interconnected with the world around them, they are expected to become not only profitable but also to remain relevant, resilient, and competitive. This expectation has further prompted interest in the sustainability idea, which is an organization's ability to maintain its operational efficiency and the ability to create value over a long term. A firm's sustainability is the continuity of its economic, social, and organizational existence, its capacity to adapt to environmental changes, and its ability to continue its economic success and social legitimacy. In today's ever-changing and complicated business environment, with stakeholder expectations continuously growing, sustainability has turned from an organization's aspiration to a strategic necessity. Oyerogba et al. (2024) suggested that sustainable organizations can be identified by their ability to link the goals of their operations with their developmental ones. Likewise, Dorathy et al. (2024) confirmed that sustainability is a multi-faceted concept that combines financial sustainability, organizational agility, and value creation for stakeholders, which boosts the long-term prospects of corporate entities.
The increasing importance of sustainability has thus led to the growing importance of corporate management as a central tool in the creation, coordination, and implementation of corporate objectives. Corporate management is the overall system of management, policies, and institutions used to manage an organization's resources towards its pre-established goals. Corporate governance practices and strategic leadership play a significant role within this context and are key to influencing organizational outcomes. Corporate governance practices refer to the systems, structures, principles, and procedures that are set up to ensure accountability, transparency, ethical conduct, and proper oversight of organizational affairs. Adeyemi et al. (2024) claimed that proper governance processes are essential for guiding decisions towards responsible management and enhancing the credibility of the organization. Closely related to governance is strategic leadership, which refers to the capacity of organizational leaders to develop a vision, establish a strategic course, and align resources to a vision for sustainability. Mbah et al. (2025) pointed out that strategic leadership contributes to the responsiveness and future competitiveness of an organization. Additionally, Boluwaji et al. (2024) contended that visionary leadership drives innovation, strategic alignment, and resilience within institutions, ultimately paving the way for sustainable growth and development.
The strategic orientation of governance and leadership structures is complemented by corporate social responsibility, risk management practices, and financial management practices, which all play a crucial role in contributing to the sustainability agenda of today's organizations. Corporate social responsibility is the incorporation of social, ethical, environmental, and community concerns into the operations and decision-making of the business in a voluntary way. Christian (2025) stated that companies with a well-established social responsibility orientation can build the trust of their stakeholders and improve corporate image. Similarly, Abimbola and Abe (2025) upheld that corporate social responsibility is a tool for sustainable value creation because of its strengthening effect on the legitimacy of the organization in the society. These are complemented by risk management practices, which include the systematic identification, evaluation, monitoring, and mitigation of uncertainties that could impact the performance of the organization. Echobu et al. (2025) argued that good risk management structures contribute towards organizational resilience and protection of strategic goals. Organizational sustainability is also based upon financial management practices, which include budgeting, investment decisions, financial planning, and allocation of resources. Jimoh (2025) noted that proper financial management ensures efficient use of resources and sustainability, and Oyeyemi et al. (2025) confirmed that good financial stewardship enhances organizational capacity for sustainability and competitiveness.
These aspects of corporate governance are especially significant in the telecommunications sector, a critical enabler of economic integration, technological innovation, information sharing, and digital transformation. The telecommunication industry can be described as a highly capital-intensive industry, with a high rate of technological change, fierce competition, and changing consumer expectations, which requires more advanced management practices to guarantee sustainability. Onwubiko et al. (2026) asserted that in technology-based sectors, the importance of integrated management frameworks has become crucial for the continuity of organizations and their competitive advantage. The telecom sector in Nigeria remains a key sector in the development of the country because of the provision of communication infrastructures and the provision of digital services. Blessing et al. (2025) pointed out that the viability of service providers depends largely on their governance arrangements, leadership, stakeholder management plans, risk management approaches, and financial management plans. In Delta State, the telecommunication companies' environment is a unique socio-economic landscape that demands effective corporate management for sustainable organizational success. Garba and Ike (2025) affirmed the significance of studying integrated corporate management and firm sustainability among the telecommunication firms in Delta State, where sustainability benefits are significant.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Business organization sustainability is an important issue in the modern management as it is directly related to the continuance of operations, competitiveness, value creation as well as stakeholders' trust. Sustainability is especially relevant in the telecommunication industry as it plays a vital part in economic development, technological progress, and digital connectivity. Corporate management creates the institutional support system where corporate resources, policies and strategic plans are aligned to attain desired goals. Organisations are expected to improve the efficiency, improve the relationships with the stakeholders and ensure their long-term survival through effective corporate governance practices, strategic leadership, corporate social responsibility practices, risk management practices and financial management practices. The growing dynamism and competitiveness of business environments force telecommunication companies to implement a full management system, which can guarantee company accountability, adaptability, innovation and sustainable performance to be relevant and successful throughout time.
Although corporate management is critical, many telecommunication companies face problems in reaching and maintaining long-term performance in their companies. The effectiveness of governance, quality of leadership, participation of stakeholders, risk management systems and financial decision making have led to uncertainties about sustainability results for companies. In an era of radical change, it appears that organizations spend a lot of resources on management processes but fail to generate the benefits of organizational resilience, operational efficiencies and sustainable growth. The implications are that the level of sustainability performance of different firms can vary significantly based on the difference in management practices. This has raised doubts about how corporate governance practices, strategic leadership, corporate social responsibility, risk management practices, and financial management practices are helping to make telecommunication companies sustainable. Unclear relations between these variables and factors may prevent wise managerial decisions and strategies in the industry.
Telecommunication services companies would ideally have good governance mechanisms, good visionary leadership, good corporate citizenship initiatives, good proactive risk management frameworks and good financial management mechanisms. But there is little empirical evidence which can be used to understand how these dimensions of corporate management can combine to influence firm sustainability, especially in Delta State telecom companies. Previous studies have considered the general organisational context or individual management variables alone and there is a lack of knowledge about how these variables act jointly on sustainability. The lack of knowledge has spurred the need for a full evaluation of the connection between corporate management and firm sustainability. In view of the above, this study intends to bridge this gap by investigating the impact of corporate governance practices, strategic leadership, corporate social responsibility, risk management practices and financial management practices on telecommunication companies sustainable development in Delta State and generate empirical evidence that will be useful to improve the managerial effectiveness and sustainable development of the organization.
