ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine the impact of digital learning tools on students’ academic achievement in Economics in secondary schools in Ethiope East Local Government Area. The study was specifically carried out to assess the influence of computer-based learning applications on students’ academic achievement in Economics, determine the effect of internet-based learning resources on students’ achievement in Economics, examine the influence of multimedia tools on students’ academic achievement in Economics, and assess the effect of mobile learning applications on students’ academic achievement in Economics. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. Hence, the questionnaire was used for data collection, while the data collected were analyzed using frequency tables, mean scores, and standard deviation. The hypotheses test was conducted using Pearson Chi-square statistical tool. A total of 2,230 Economics students constituted the population of the study, while 339 respondents were selected as sample size using Taro Yamane formula, with a validated sample of 324 respondents selected through multi-stage sampling technique comprising stratified and convenience sampling methods. The participants consisted of Economics students from selected secondary schools in Ethiope East Local Government Area. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that computer-based learning applications significantly influence students’ academic achievement in Economics at t = 13.84, r = 0.62, p = 0.021. The study also showed that internet-based learning resources have a significant effect on students’ achievement in Economics at t = 12.91, r = 0.58, p = 0.018. Likewise, multimedia tools were found to have a significant influence on students’ academic achievement in Economics at t = 13.27, r = 0.60, p = 0.016, while mobile learning applications significantly affect students’ academic achievement in Economics at t = 12.48, r = 0.57, p = 0.022. The study therefore recommends that school administrators should integrate digital learning tools into Economics instruction, government should provide adequate ICT infrastructure in secondary schools, teachers should be trained on effective use of digital instructional resources, and schools should encourage students’ access to mobile and internet-based learning platforms for improved academic performance.

INTRODUCTION (Preview)
1.1 Background of the Study
The swift progression of information and communication technologies has profoundly impacted on several aspects of the society, especially in the field of education. Education is a critical pathway for the development of human capital, innovation and sustainable development in societies. The world of education is increasingly adopting technological innovations to improve the teaching and learning experiences over the past several years. Nwagwu (2025) noted that technological development has transformed the educational process with the development of more interactive and accessible learning environment. Likewise, Anafa et al. (2025) stated that the incorporation of technology in education has opened more doors to learning knowledge and making learning effective. The use of technology in learning is also being increasingly recognized and this is due to the need to equip learners to participate in the increasingly technology-driven society. Halima and Titilayo (2025), also noted that technology has become unessential tool in the modern learning system as it enables learners to communicate, collaborate and get access to various learning materials. Schools continue to adjust to these changes, and focus has turned to the technological tools that will aid in effective teaching and learning.
As technology becomes more integrated into the educational process, digital learning tools are becoming a valuable resource for teaching and learning. Digital learning tools are technology-based devices, applications, software and online platforms which support the delivery, acquisition and management of knowledge digitally. This includes learning software, virtual learning environments, multimedia presentations, mobile learning apps and Internet based teaching resources. Digital learning tools have the ability to complement the learning process in the classroom by offering interactive and engaging learning activities for learners (Badamasi and Chinonso, 2024). As explained by Oskarita and Arasy (2024), these tools are useful for students with various learning styles who can access the information they need in various ways such as text, audio, video, and simulation. The increasing use of digital learning tools has thus helped to move from teacher-centred approaches to learning to learner-centred approaches. Emmanuel et al. (2026) argued that the integration of digital tools in the school environment fosters flexibility, accessibility, and ongoing learning opportunities, further enhancing the educational journey for students.
In a digital learning tool dominated educational environment, the relevance of the digital learning tools is often discussed with regard to students' academic achievement. Academic achievement is the extent of learning that a learner has attained as indicated by examinations, assessments, class work and other indicators of academic performance. Academic achievement is an important measure of the extent to which educational goals are met, according to Chigbu et al. (2023). The issue of learning resources and students achievement is a key of educational research since it is believed that the learning resources can help students to get meaningful learning. Technology-enhanced learning environments offer students chances for active engagement with instructional content which enhances understanding and retention of the content, according to Etukakpan (2025). Similarly, Okokoyo and Ossai (2025) claimed that digital learning experiences can boost motivation, engagement, and commitment for learners in relation to learning tasks. Such characteristics become especially relevant in the context of academic work – particularly in subjects that demand critical thinking, analytical reasoning and the application of theoretical concepts and where the use of digital learning tools makes a difference.
Economics is one of the core subjects taught in secondary schools and is an important subject to provide students with information on production, consumption, distribution and allocation of resources. The subject enables learners to acquire analytical skills to comprehend economic issues and make informed decisions in daily life. Favour et al. (2025) pointed out that innovative teaching strategies are needed in the teaching of Economics to foster conceptual understanding and student engagement. Digital learning tools can enhance instruction by presenting economic concepts in a multimedia format, as simulations, through interactive learning activities and virtual learning environments. The importance of using technology to support learning environments was highlighted by Costa et al. (2024) to improve learners' understanding of complex concepts and to foster HOC. Ethiopia East Local Government Area Secondary schools are gradually experiencing a technologically advanced educational environment and changing instructional practices. Therefore, it is important to examine the effect of using digital learning tools on students' academic achievement in Economics as part of understanding the role of technology to support academic achievement in secondary schools in the area.

1.2 Statement of  the Problem
Incorporation of technology in the school environment has further transformed the ways of teaching and learning in secondary schools in various contexts. Nowadays, education systems are getting more and more dependent on digital materials to supplement traditional educational practices and to enable learning students to gain the knowledge and skills that are relevant to them. The manner of learning delivery in economics education has slowly shifted to the incorporation of different types of technological supports that are intended to improve the understanding of abstract and practical concepts. In today's classrooms, interaction, visualization, and self-paced learning are deemed valuable for student development and are all offered in digital learning environments. The focus on improving the quality of instruction in a way that is innovative has been given as secondary education is a stepping stone to higher studies and preparation for employment. This study area is the reflection of similar educational development where schools are to a certain extent embracing digital tools to aid in their classroom learning and enhance the learning experiences of the learners in the Economics education sector.
In secondary schools, even though the use of digital learning tools is growing, its use in teaching and learning is still inconsistent and not always effective. Many schools have digital resources but fail to fully incorporate these resources into the teaching process, thus resulting in the lack of the instructional impact on the students' understanding of the concepts in Economics. Lack of technical skills, availability of working devices and infrastructure that allows for continued digital learning are frequent issues for teachers and students. Therefore, these tools are not used to their fullest extent to improve the performance of students. The current situation shows that there is a gap between availability and effective use of technology, as the technology is available, but it is not constantly reflected in the improvement of learning outcomes. This gap indicates better awareness of the use of digital learning tools and their impact on students' learning outcomes in secondary schools in the context of the study.
A digital learning environment is expected to be fully integrated into classroom instruction for students in an ideal educational environment, to improve academic achievement in Economics, deepen the understanding of concepts, and increase students' engagement. The aim of these tools is to facilitate interactive learning modes that will help pupils to visualise economic concepts, explore real-life examples and think critically to prepare them for success in the classroom. Ideally, teachers would be using these to enhance the way they teach, so that pupils would also be able to learn from practical as well as theoretical methods. The use of these tools in relation to learning outcomes, however, in the secondary school classroom in Economics, is still unclear, especially within the local teaching context. Such uncertainty results in an empirical knowledge gap that hampers evidence-based improvement of instruction. This study, thus, focuses on the effect of digital learning tools on students academic achievement in Economics in secondary schools area.
