ABSTRACT
This study assessed Artificial Intelligence (AI) and socio-economic development of women in Lafia Local Government Area, with the aim of evaluating their awareness, access, economic engagement, and social outcomes associated with AI usage. Four specific objectives guided the investigation: to examine the level of AI awareness, identify accessible AI tools, determine economic influences, and assess social development impacts among women. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The study population comprised 201,500 women in Lafia, from which a sample of 399 was selected using Taro Yamane’s formula at a 95% confidence level. Stratified random sampling ensured representation across urban, semi-urban, and rural districts. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed with SPSS, using descriptive statistics (frequency, mean, standard deviation) and inferential statistics (ANOVA).Findings showed a moderate to high level of awareness of AI (mean = 3.93), though frequent usage remained low (mean = 2.94). Accessible AI tools included social media recommendation engines (mean = 3.40) and voice assistants (mean = 3.38), while advanced tools like agricultural AI scored lower (mean = 2.65). On economic development, respondents reported positive influence on business opportunities (mean = 3.44) and financial decisions (mean = 3.31), though operational cost reduction and skill acquisition remained weak areas. Socially, women confirmed improved educational access (mean = 3.38), health awareness (mean = 3.20), and digital connectivity (mean = 3.41), but low civic engagement and inclusion. Hypotheses testing using ANOVA revealed significant relationships between AI usage and both economic empowerment (F = 5.014, p = 0.002) and social development (F = 3.789, p = 0.011). The study concludes that AI presents a viable path for women’s development in Lafia, though gaps in infrastructure, digital literacy, and tool specialization limit broader impact. It recommends capacity-building programs, AI tool customization for local relevance, and policy interventions for inclusive digital integration.

1.1 Background of the Study

Throughout the world, social and economic development in general terms summarizes the comprehensive manner through which societies improve the economic status and well-being of people, which is measured in terms of education, income, employment opportunities, access to health, and political participation. Todaro and Smith (2024) highlighted that development is not merely economic growth but more so an increase in the true freedom that people experience, for instance, freedom from poverty, illiteracy, and isolation. Yamtah et al. (2025) added that socio-economic development encompasses both material and human aspects. in Sub-Saharan Africa, the phenomenon of socio-economic development is propelled by a unique combination of historical, institutional, and cultural factors. This is because the  region has been experiencing endemic poverty, long-term unemployment, and gender inequalities, all of which hinder inclusive development.

Gender wise, women are not passive beneficiaries of development but active agents whose empowerment brings enormous economic and social returns. Women make up more than 41% of Nigeria's labor force and are the majority in the informal sector, where they operate 60% of SMEs (National Bureau of Statistics, 2022). They provide approximately 70% of farm labor in rural areas and are key to food security and household welfare (FAO, 2021).  Kabeer (2021) notes that when women acquire productive assets and decision-making capabilities, households become more secure and societies more just. The African Development Bank (AfDB, 2022) confirms that women's participation in economic activities is low, irrespective of the key role they have in keeping agricultural productivity and informal trade alive. The Human Development Index (HDI), the Gender Inequality Index (GII), and the Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI) all note women falling behind in access to education, credit, computer literacy, and employment in most of the nations around Africa. According to  Chinelo & Uchenna (2023), women's role is pivotal from micro-enterprise development to community health activism, from the grassroots to national development. However, deep-seated challenges like patriarchal norms, illiteracy, digital exclusion, and institutional lack of support hinder them from reaching their full potential.

Most notably is that the Fourth Industrial Revolution comes with revolutionary technologies that are reshaping productivity, service delivery, and human interaction. The most influential technology in the revolution is Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI can be defined as the replication of human intelligence in machines that can think and learn (Russell & Norvig, 2021). It entails abilities such as natural language processing, machine learning, robotics, and automation of decisions. Schalkwyk and Young (2022) define AI as a technological system that is able to analyze data, recognize patterns, and execute tasks using little human interference, hence optimizing efficiency and creating new knowledge. AI is gradually shaping health, education, finance, agriculture, and governance. Artificial Intelligence tools and platforms encompass a broad array of technologies designed to perform specific tasks, process data, and facilitate intelligent decision-making. According to Corchado et al. (2023), AI tools are typically categorized into three broad functional groups: perception-based tools (e.g., image and speech recognition), decision-support systems (e.g., diagnostics and forecasting tools), and autonomous systems (e.g., robotics and self-learning platforms). Each group serves different sectors but shares a foundational reliance on data and computational logic. Importantly, the architecture of these tools allows them to be customized for diverse needs, from industrial automation to personalized education.

In Nigeria, artificial intelligence has prospects for enhancing access to healthcare, market information, education, and entrepreneurship for women are growing in interest. For instance, AI-powered mobile interventions are improving mother health in rural communities, and AI-powered platforms such as SheLeadsAfrica are providing business guidance and mentorship to women entrepreneurs (Oyelude & Bamigbola, 2022). Owing to the fact that Nigerian women are vital engines of socio-economic progress, making huge contributions in agriculture, trade, education, and healthcare. Teena, & Sahoo, D. (2024) added that Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents an opportunity to bridge the gap of women low contribution to social and economic development as AI-powered platforms can provide women with precision agriculture analytics, mobile health diagnostics, business insights, and e-learning opportunities that bypass traditional barriers. Given that empowering women using AI can accelerate inclusive growth by multiplying their productivity, autonomy, and access to global networks, this research is keen on examining how AI can be used as an enabler of socio-economic empowerment for women in the Lafia Local Government of Nasarawa State, Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

As nations strive to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the empowerment of women and the pursuit of gender equality stand as foundational pillars in the architecture of inclusive and sustainable development. Within this global agenda, gender equality is not merely a moral imperative but a pragmatic strategy for unlocking human potential, enhancing community resilience, and driving economic growth. While progress has been recorded in several parts of the world, and some African countries, Nigeria still reflects significant disparities in outcomes for women, especially in rural and semi-urban areas (UN Women, 2021). In places like Lafia, Nasarawa State, women continue to grapple with longstanding structural inequalities that hinder their full participation in socio-economic development.

Igharo et al (2025) observed that the growing rhetoric and policy frameworks promoting women’s inclusion, many Nigerian women remain on the margins of technological advancement and economic participation, which in turn reinforces cycles of poverty and social exclusion. The persistent gap between national policy aspirations and lived realities calls for a closer examination of how transformative tools like Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be leveraged to bridge this divide and accelerate women's inclusion in meaningful development processes. Research by Ibrahim, and  Olivier (2024) indicates that women in these communities often lack access to critical tools, skills, and information necessary for enhancing their livelihoods, which in turn sustains cycles of poverty, low economic output, and limited civic influence. The restricted access to emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), further compounds this exclusion, significantly curtailing women’s capacity to participate meaningfully in national development efforts. Akinola and Olayemi (2024) identified poor digital literacy, inadequate ICT infrastructure, and cultural biases as major barriers to AI utilization among Nigerian women. Furthermore, low awareness and lack of policy guidance on inclusive AI deployment exacerbate the exclusion.

While existing studies on AI has  shown to improve productivity in agriculture, healthcare, and education sectors, as documented by Alabi et al. (2023), its potential in advancing women’s socio-economic empowerment remains under-explored and underutilized. This gap in both policy and empirical attention presents a critical concern because If AI continues to evolve without deliberate efforts to include women, existing inequalities may wide and the marginalization of women in digital transformation undermines the inclusive growth agenda envisioned in Nigeria’s national development plans. Against this backdrop, this study investigates how Artificial Intelligence can contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic development of women in Lafia Local Government.
